Im just wondering if the Most expected mods (HoM and street figther of course) are going to fall victim to the Vicious Copyright laws ?? C'mon. we all know how the original creators can get cranky about small stuff (not that either HoM or SF crews earn any money on these mods but still) .I just wanna know if i have to hurry and download them b4 the "Long Arm Of The Law" reaches out and pulls them away from "The net" (not that i wont hurry and DL HoM anyway). |
Err, uumh.. AAAH, What the HECK!!

I think Street fighter will fall victim to the copyright. But, For HoM, I dont know. This is the first major EQ mod thats coming out. Whether or not it falls victim will have to be seen |

I think anyone who doesn't rush to dl both those mods has something wrong with them anyway |

You are wrong. If anything the HoM mod will. Why? Well because the creater of the Street Fighter mod once posted that he got permission from the creaters of Street Fighter series that he could make the mod just as long as he made absolutely no profit from it and because he's gonna release it for free my guess is there is no profit, therefore the mod is ours to enjoy. |

Hmmm, I don't know...
You see, I'm a big elder scrolls fan, and an independant team of developers were making a middle earth mod for Morrowind. It was non-profit and looked like it was going to be one of those revolutionary first-of-a-kind mod, adn If anything would sell more books, DVDs etc.
So last year, the barstools at the Tolkien estate decided to give them an ulitimatum: scrap (hehe, it is supposed to say Scr4p) the mod, or we'll sue your German arses. And so, a real treat was held back from the hungry grasps of the public.
There is a moral in there, somewhere. Ahem. |

"No, I'm sure he means that figuratively, as in all people who manufacture dairy products" |

I can say for sure that I have permission from Capcom themselves to use their IP, on the grounds that obviously no profit is made from this and also nothing slanderous towards Capcom themselves. That was the basic rundown of the email I receieved from Capcom before I started pumping serious work into my mod.
Some companies are very protective of their IP's like Blizzard(starcraft etc etc), Square (Final Fantasy stuff) for example. The best and only way is to email the repsective owners of the material you plan to use and ask for permission first before even starting. If you don't go about it like this then i'd say 8/10 you'll be in for a shock when the companies find out and you'll recieve a nice cease & desist email. I believe Rico and co have gone about it the same way so there shouldn't be any problems when these mod's are released. |
