For some reason whenever I try to play my games on my pc, the monitor will suddenly turn off, and I have to restart my computer. Is my computer overheating or is it my video card?

I doubt this is overheating if it happens everytime you start a game as it would need some time to run before it overheats. The graphics card seems to be the problem from your description ... im thinking bad/corrupted drivers or maybe you havent seeded it properly. Have you been running this graphics card for long? was it working properly once before?

For every PC problem there is about 50 different reasons it could have happened. Just try to think what you did just before the problem first occured

I've been using it since about June. And it was doing this before, and somebody told me to get new drivers. I've went through a couple of different drivers and it still does it. I used to play Warcraft III and it would do it to me a lot, but then I grabbed a good driver and it quit messing up. But then I quit playing games, and I just started up again, and now it's doing this.

First thing I would say is your vid card. That happenned to me while using an ATi Radeon 9600XT on a mobo with an interfering chipset. And when I say interfering, I mean that the card has issues with that chipset. Even though ATi said that it would work perfect..... It made me go through hell before purchasing a Nvidia GeForce 6600GT which is perfect until I get a 7800GT

Well the thing is, when I checked my computer a month ago, I would run about 30 degreese Celcius. And it would reach 40 when I played a game, but I guess that's normal. For some reason now whenever my computer is just idle it's rocking 40 degreese, and then when I try to play a game I think it gets to 45 and the moniter just shuts off and says it's trying to save energy.

This can occur when the monitor in question cannot handle the refresh rate or sometimes the resolution the game is trying to run in.

Check your drivers and bring down the refresh rate to say 60 or 75Hz. If you can specify the frequency you want in a game's launcher, make sure its set to either 60 or 75 again.

Failing this, run the games in a lower resolution and see if that helps.

If you've only got a cheap monitor it probably wont support 85+Hz and certainly not in anything more than 640*480. The bigger the resolution the lower the max frequency can be.

That is true, I had to purchase a new monitor for that reason as well. Now I can go up to 100Mhz refresh rate without it having issues. It's currently set to 85MHz

Find a good monitor, cheap or not, that has a good refresh rate, and might I suggest Samsung!

well I had this moniter before, and I used to have a 64mb video card. It never would do it to me any other time...but now I have a totally new computer. So I'm not sure if it's the motherboard in general, or what.

Tell me this, is it an integrated vid card or external vid card? When I say external I mean you need to plug it into either a PCI, AGP, or PCI-E slot.

It's an AGP video card. Why?

Do you have a temperature monitoring program for your vid card? Or temperature monitor for your cpu?

If either is above 50C you should look into a cooling solution.

That's what I was thinking. I have a program called Everest that tells me my temperatures. I don't know if it's healthy or not but here were the results.

Temperatures
Motherboard     69 °C (156 °F)
CPU     41 °C (106 °F)

Cooling Fans
CPU     3479 RPM

Voltage Values
CPU Core     1.87 V
CPU Aux     0.05 V
+3.3 V     3.26 V
+5 V     5.08 V
+12 V     11.67 V
-12 V     0.39 V
-5 V     1.49 V
+5 V Standby     4.97 V
VBAT Battery     0.06 V

Mobo seems a tad hot! Is that idle?

Might I suggest you look into a solution for your mobo, such as lots o' case fans!

Or I would suggest getting a new good, cheap mobo! That seems hot for idle!

Well I should be getting a new mobo within the end of the year, but for now I thought about getting this huge fan my dad has. It made his temp about 30 degreese for his mobo...that would cut mine in half.
