Hmm I started my comp and noticed norton internet security and antivirus didn't start ao I opened them and tried to manually start them but when I click enable, nothing happens no matter how much I tryed. so I restarted my comp in hopes that they would start up when windows started this time like they usually do... no luck. So I thought maybe I just need to re install so I hit the uninstall button and I get another error! "A Norton Internet Security account with supervisor access must me logged on to uninstall this product." I thought to myself "I AM A SUPERVISOR ACCOUNT!! STUPID NORTON!" so then I poped in the installation disc thinking maybe I can just wright over Norton, but nooo, same error. So then I tried going to where it's installed and manually deleting the folder... but noo again! This time I get the error, "Cannot Delete. Access is Denied"
Sooo How am I supposed to get norton off my comp so I can re install? Or Why isn't it starting when I start my comp or try to manually start it? I have no firewall or antivirus right now... my comps gonna explode.
also since norton started being retarded, I cant sign into msn... it says my gateway appears to be offline... |

I know exactly what your problem is, You use Norton
No idea how you would go about uninstalling it if you are already in an admin account ... thats something you should probably double check. Also in your admin account you should try right clicking the folder, go to security (i think it is - this is off the top of my head) and there should be a tab "privilages". Add your user account and then you should be able to delete/access.
I would suggest going either NOD32 if you dont mind paying for an AV as the trial that i used was great but im not prepared to pay for an AV just yet so i use AVG Free which isnt the best but does its job acceptably. |

I CAN FIX IT! REFORMAT! lol
I am assuming this is for your AlienWare?! If you paid a little extra for a recovery disk.... which if you didn't was pointless in purchasing an AlienWare....... Anyway, if you bought a recovery disk with your AlienWare, then simply reformat your primary HDD(one in which Windows is installed) and then you should be able to use the recovery disk. Unless your disk is just for Windows Recovery! In which case your f'ed! lol
So I would see what that Recovery Disk has on it, if it has Windows setup files for installing WinXP Home/Pro, then reformat, and do all you need to it. Oh and a hint, DON'T USE NORTON!. lol
Norton is a blatant computer hazard. |

I got the recovery disk. It has all the original files the computer came with. But I'm definately not gonna re format... Too much to lose and would take to long to back everything up. |

That's just one of the prices you pay for even owning a pc. Because sooner or later you must reformat because of something. Whether it's because you want to increase the speed of your pc due to something slowing Windows down, or you just want to reformat because of a virus you can't get rid of, etc. Reformatting is part of having a computer m8.
However, I would advise you to contact Norton. Maybe they can give you a little help with the issue. Or even AlienWare. |

I was going off my experience with Windows 2000 as that is the OS i use ... also i didnt realise that it was a brand name computer, they do some weird things to their PC's.
Im not actually at home right now (im doing some stupid course) and will have a look for the proper precedures of what i was trying to explain earlier when i get home.
PS. XP may be quite different to what i describe and also because its an alienware system it would have to be XP Pro SP2 wouldnt it |

Ctrl + Alt + Delete and see if you see any unusual process running the the Processes tab.
Also, XP Home is better for gaming. Pro has a select few issues....
And SkipRat, obviously I am more man than you, even at my current age. What kind of smartretarded user sends useless spam PMs to someone and does not expect to be blocked?! Honestly..... |

Yea i think with XP Home you cant get proper admin rights but rather a weakened down version of an admin ie. all the features from pro are there but you just cant access them.
Well any way what i was trying to explain earlier is
1. Right click the folder and go to properties
2. Click the security tab (Please note - i dont actually think you can do this with XP Home)

There should be more tabs there but for this pic there is not as im not in my admin account
3. If everyone is already there with full control your problem is not solved, however, if it is not, click add and then scroll to your account name and add it. Then back in the original security window select your username from the list and give it full access. |

You could also try useing "Regcleaner" to clear out all the norton entries and also look in "Common Files" or just do a search for all "Symantec" folders (in safe mode) and delete them
Then you will be able to installa fresh copy. |
