SPYWARE ... anything to do with smileys and is free will for the most part have some sort of spyware/virus. Do you really need more smileys anyway.
and ghostkid is right ... some freeware games are way more fun to play then the latest games coming out. |

He said it once ... you are the one who brought it up again. To be perfectly honest i wish you would stop mentioning it as its getting very annoying. I think we all know your stance with msn (from all the experience youve had ) and there is no need to mention it again. |

There is nothing wrong with MSN... If you had people who are SMART and dont go to questionable websites and click every link they get VIA msn then you wouldn't be getting any viruses. On the other hand if you dont posess common sense when it comes to clicking links and browsing the net then you DESERVE to get a virus.
MSN is safe when i used it. I have come close to getting a few viruses from... gullable relatives via messaging but i know a bad link when i see one also followed by perfect puncutiation when practally every i know on msn doesnt bother to say "Hey, check this out. [insert virus link here]" no hi, no explination to what the link is... Just a hey check this out.
Here is some tips on protecting your PC from virus attacks...
1. Get Mc Afee. NOT norton, norton sucks more balls than a, well nevermind lets not go there but im sure you get my point. NORTON SUCKS! Get it here.
if not then AVG is ok... i find that software questionable since it is free. Get it here
2. Get Adaware. Keep your PC clean from spyware and other harmful spyware / malware or whatever else scum you may pick up from questionable sites. Get it here.
3. Get spybot Search and destroy. This handy program gets rid of spybots. and other things adaware cannot clean up. also install the 'tea timer' thingie to prevent farther bots from boarding your PC. Get it here.
4. IF you tend to piss off the wrong people who intend to hack your pc, get Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is a very powerful firewall for free that will block pretty much any incoming / outgoing well... anything. ts a bit too restrictive for my taste but it works. Get it here.
5. Stop downloading porno.
6. Stop going to "disgusting images / video websites (like rotten.com)
7. Stop going to places like myspace. Or any other 'booty scavenger hunt' websites.
8. Stop trying to download warez apps (if you are then KNOW where to go before looking.)
9. Stop clicking popups in belief you actually won 1 million dollars, or believing you are actually the 1,000,000th lucky visitor to the website and you will get a fabulious prize. NO you wont actually win a xbox 360 if you punch out bin laden...
10. popups saying you have spyware and to "click here to help protect yourself from spyware" is a lie... THAT popup is indication you already have spyware on your PC and you better scan and get rid of it.
11. Popups that look like 'real windows popups' can be tricky if you are in a hurry to do something and are expecting an error or confirmation. LOOK before you click a button.
12. Hire hitmen to take out the gator corporation. Then when they are all dead to piss on their graves. (i know everyone here at one point in time was harassed by their spyware, it spreads faster than aids.)
13. Deposit money into my Pay Pal account. |

I think mainly when you get a popup and it says you get a free stuff like an Xbox360 is abunch of crap and could be spyware, because it asks you for your email, or popups that have little games on it like: shoot the gangster to get a free Sony PSP is what I also consider to be Spyware.
EDIT: or PORN |

D2k has a pretty good list built up there... it really just all comes down to common sense.
Since I've had this computer I've only put ZoneAlarm on it (Zonelabs) and I have also put Avast! Antivirus on it, which is also free and updates weekly or even more more than that (I've had it update 4 times in one week) (Avast!).
I also recommend getting a port sniffer program. Go to SnapFiles, go to Freeware, then find Port/Traffic Monitoring section and find one. Its not necessary, but I find it very useful when you suspect a trojan or virus is accessing the internet and doing bad things (like sending emails to all your contacts with a virus, allowing hackers access, etc.) Most port sniffers I've used show the IP of whatever is logged into you computer, and if the hacker is unscrupulous you will get their IP and ISP information directly from the sniffer, which makes it very easy to turn them into their ISP and get them in some deep doo-doo. . They also allow you to block access on certain ports and programs, and instantly close any open ports that may be allowing bad traffic in... very useful.
I also use a couple other various tools from SnapFiles to check all my stuff at times, but I've had this computer for nearly two years now and I have not had a single virus/trojan/spyware/malware, et cetra... just get a good firewall and antivirus, and use common sense while browing and you'll be A-OK! |

i dont see a problem with Norten. but let me say, Mc Afee has to be the worst virus protection ive ever seen
this whole topic just comes down to a differnce of opinion, believe what you want, but beware. like that, if you use MSN then ill never accept a file from you unless its been scanned, i never have, never will. sure i still get the ocasional virus, but nothing big. and i always get rid of it in a few mins. |
