... we're back.

[edit]
Everything should be running fully now, if you come across a problem with something post a message in this thread or drop me a PM.

First reply to this news post is a little 'what happened' report and comments about the hamsters...

Ok. Now the dust has settled I'll run through the events that occured in the run up to todays fun...

Server had crashed 4 times in just over the last week. First two were a week apart, then just 3 days later and finally 1 day after that.

That was yesterday.

Having ruled out software from the previous crashes, the server hosts took the machine offline yesterday to check various parts of the hardware.

The problem presented itself fairly quickly when the primary harddrive failed to boot during their tests.

Fortunately the drive in question only had the OS (and everything needed to run L4Y )... not L4Y itself.

The machine is (obviously) running again, with a new primary HDD and a fresh install of its OS and various pieces of software.

Site could have been up and running about an hour or two after reading the email from the support guys however I have one slight problem... L4Y is not my day job

Fortunately my boss is a very understanding guy and understood the situation which meant I was able to get the new server running with a "we're down" message. He even went as far as offering the use of one of work's servers for displaying said message (this was before the new server was even responding), hence some of you may have been directed to a 'non-l4y' server for a short period of time with a short message about 'flaying our web designers'. His idea of humour I think

At this point I'd like to thank 'the boss' for his understanding and letting me spend at least an hour kicking the server.

Not long after that the flaying of web designers message was added to the actual server down message. We also had a little laugh saying that the hamsters were running as hard as they could in their wheels in order to get the site up and running (a slight lie... nothing was done towards actually getting L4Y running until I got home from work about an hour ago) and a form was put up inviting words of encouragement for the hamsters.

A selection of this 'encouragement' is shown below, any names etc have been removed...

Hey, of all days it goes down it had to be today. I have loads of files to upload for HL2, but i guess i will have to wait
till you get the site back up.

Do you know how long it's going to take. I feel like someone has just taken my candy, now that L4Y has gone

Thanks

P.S I hope your treating those hamsters good. Don't want to have to call the RSPCA

I may not have ever uploaded anything, but now my homepage has turned into a hamster sweatshop.
Please take your time as not to mess anything up.
Best of luck

on REDFROG his birthday?

Get RAID.

I'm amazed you don't run a site of this size off of RAID'ed disks.

i would expect that, this is a international site, and the amount of bandwhith you get per hour must be fenominional!

but overall, im happy that L4Y is back up, and to think, i almost was forced to go to a movie with the girlfriend, but L4Y saved me! thank you oh sweet mercilous hamsters!

Garner i think youve done a great job keeping the site up for 5 years, wouldnt want something like this to ruin it.
