I'm afraid that Stargate SG-1: The Alliance has been cancelled completely. You can read about it HERE
Stargate-Game.com has started a Petition Here to keep this cancelation from happening 100%. I'm going to sign it, and i hope you will too |

Do not cancell this! I was acually looking forward to buying this. Are you aware that you would loose over 2 million dollars if you cancell this? If you dicide to cancell, at least release the work you have done to the public, to see what we can do. |

Stargate MMO coming to earth
STARGATE WORLDS is the name of the game.
While fans were still reeling from the news of Stargate SG-1: Alliance's cancellation, license holder MGM and developer Cheyenne Mountain announced a new Stargate MMO, Stargate Worlds.
Apparently plans have been in the pipeline since September, 2005, for this "MMO that provides players with a form of exploration, adventure and ranged combat set in worlds of historical human time periods, alien environments, and outer space locations."
In the game, players will take on the roles of scientists and soldiers who "inhabit and vie for control over alien worlds. Local populations will shift their allegiance between the two alliances. Outside threats, such as the Ori, will conspire to further change the face of these worlds. Players will be able to tip the balance of power on these worlds, beating back the Ori invasion, and swaying the local populations to their side through quests, combat and trade. Whether you are a solitary explorer, master tradesman, or commander of a massive armed force - your every action will alter the worlds of the Stargate universe."

Ahh its a shame to be sure, was looking forward to this.
The problem is £1,000,000 aint alot for MGM to 1. Make and 2. Loose. They would rather cut their losses and do the franchise proud than sink money into something that isnt going no where.
Not sure about that figure, that would be 50,000 sales (if you add up the full retail price of £40). I dont know what a good number of sales would be, but certainly I expect alot higher than that. The problem is that you have to weigh the amount it would cost to finish, the amount it will cost to produce, ship, sell, support... it all adds up. if you have 10 developers, that would cost them £300,000 at least in salaries alone, and I dont know how big their team is. The problem is that the game studio I expect gets commission, the publisher would take their cut, as would the retailers. MGM wouldnt make an awful lot. What they want is a game that is outstanding on its own and would gain them fans who then go and buy the dvd's.
As for them releasing it as a demo or to the 'community'. Nahh, not going to happen. The code would probably be a joint copyright arrangement, the content would be mgm's intellectual property, they would have to pay for server space for this 'community' to download the thing. + on the code front if you've ever looked through the core engine code of a game, its pretty hard, 3rd parties would have alot of trouble 'owning' the code, and sure as hell the dev team aint going to write you a nice doc informing you of how to finish their game. Developers dont give out their engine, if its going to get used, they would license it.
Nothing wrong with being hopeful, but being realistic is useful. If MGM thought the game would be good for them and the franchise, they would have got it finished. If they have another game on the table as well, then it suggests to me that Stargate Worlds holds greater esteem with the management. + they would make subscription money out of MMO games! If you were management and you just see the world as potential $$$.. which horse would you back! |
