I have seen somebody playing it online at school, tried it put, and it was really aw4some and I am getting it soon.
Is it 56k friendly?
Got any links for mapping tutorials?
Are there any paticular servers that I should watch for?
Much appreciated thanks. |

Counter Strike needs a good connection in order to be able to compete with other players. It might run on 56k, but the lag might in effect kill you. A faster connection would ensure more precise shots, which are an essential part of the game. |

Meh so It will be just like the old game I used to play, Red Faction. Always lagged, except for a few servers.
Questions left unanswered:
Mapping tutorials?
Specific servers to look out for? |

Well, I can tell you that if you lagged in RF on 56K, you don't even need to try CSS except for off-line mode with bots
But yea, I used to have 56K connected @ 53.3Kb/s and I never lagged in RF, no matter the server. Unless the server was just laggy, then everyone(including me) lagged.
But for CSS, if you read on the box where it says "Recommended", it says Broadband connection. I would suggest something at around 128Kb/s(ISDN I believe) or faster. |

Nothing will stop me from trying..
And there were a few servers in Red Faction where I never lagged, no matter how many players. Well I did lag once, there were 2 cheaters shooting rapid rockets in Warlords, doing as much geo as possible. But I think you understand why I lagged there... |

I remember I was still on 56k when I bought HL2 and it was so infuriating just installing everything cos a lot of it has to be downloaded via Steam I got there in the end and played through the SP of HL2 which was awesome.
As for playing one fo the Source games via Multiplayer I seriously wouldn't recommend it... That's the good thing with RF, I was actually better at RF when I was on 56k to when they finally upgraded my area to Broadband, but Source is different. There's a lot more information being thrown about and you're gonna need a strong connection.
As for mapping tutorials:
www.interlopers.net
www.snarkpit.net
www.google.com
But bearing in mind you have at least a 220MB download for the SDK (Source Developers Kit) so that you can use the editor. How long will it take you to download that on 56k?
In terms of servers... you could just create your own and play against BOTS... If they have any intention of enabling faster internet in your area sometime soon then do this and get to grips with the game. There's a hell of a lot of server control over pretty much everything in this game so there's a lot of fun to be had even without going on an MP server. One of my favourite (mess around) servers is called MeTaMoRpHiCs server where it's always Humans versus BOTS. However, the BOTS are like SUPER-STRENGTH BOTS and are completely insane in terms of skill and aggression. He has unlimited human grenades going on and you have as much cash as you want to buy the best gear, but there's always the same number of BOTS regardless of the number of Human players on the opposing team. Can be damn fun at times! |

They are never going to upgrade the area I live in to broadband.
And yes I know you can play against/with bots, up to 99 I think. Heh me versus 99 bots. I would own, if I could find a decent sniping spot in time. Then it would be like those carnival sooting games, except not rigged.
Alright that would answer all of my questions.
And the develepors kit @ 220 megs would take me around 16 hours to download. |

Unless you have a friend who has broadband that doesn't mind you bringing your PC over to update Steam and CS:S or will download and burn the files to disk for you, it will take you weeks of downloading before you can even start up CS:S.
After that you will have to be very careful not to let Steam connect to the internet again. If it connects and detects an update you won't be able to start CS:S til you download it.
Add to that if you do try to play online you'll probably get kicked by the server for warping all over the place.
Multi in most new games just isn't compatible with 56k these days unfortunately. |

Do I have to get an update as soon as I install the game? If not I will just play it in singleplayer, I don't care. 99 bots sounds like fun lol. |
