Yeah easy. you go back in time after watching the lottery, and buy a lottery ticket, then leave it at your house for your Past self to find then hilarity ensues when your past find loses the ticket and you keep going back and forth in time trying to place the ticket somewhere he might actually find it. |

but when/if your past self does find it, that might meen that your now rich in the future and thwen you didnt have the time to go back and give yourself the ticket.... thats the things that screw up the space-time continum... |

Yes, the whole paradox thing is a major pain in the space/time vortex.
However, I was thinking about this last night and a possible solution is a wormhole.
Get two history books.
Leave one at home and take the other one 1 lightyear out into space.
If someone changes history on earth, it will show up immediately in the book left on earth but it will be a year before that same alteration will appear in the book 1 lightyear away.
The ripple in time would take a year to reach it.
Now although you can't physically travel at the speed of light, you can cheat it through a wormhole.
If someone again changes history, a person with the second history book just has to create a wormhole back to earth just before the time ripple reaches them and then close it behind them. By doing this they now have an unchanged copy of the history book plus the changed one. They have effectively dodged the time ripple and avoided becoming part of the altered reality.
This would mean you could also find a way to kill yourself in the past and yet not cease to exist in the future... if you did it right.
Interesting isn't it. Imagine doing that to someone else. All history of them existing would be erased and yet they'd still be there alive and well... and very confused. The ultimate torture. Family and friends wouldn't know them. They'd have no bank account. |

WTH? you've been watching too much back to the future it doesn't matter how far away it is because that book wouldn't have been written yet when you go back in time ... it would be changed before it was printed, let alone you taking it out there. That book might not even be out there anymore after you changed time too.
To put it simply i don't think time has any ripple effect to it.
Time is a singular dimention ... well to us. |

Actually time does have a ripple effect although not like in Back to the Future. It would be very fast but would still be limited to the speed of light. Its like Einstein's clock. If you move away from a clock at the speed of light it will appear to have stopped. Go faster and it will appear to be running backwards... although going faster is impossible. However it does make sense if you think about it because you would be catching up with "older" light that bounced off the face of the clock.
The ripple caused by changing something in the past would move outwards, from the point in space at which the change occured, at the speed of light. If the sun exploded right now, we wouldn't see it for 8.3 minutes. In fact, from our perspective the event hasn't even occured until we see it. Think about it. There's no way for us to find out until the light from the explosion gets here. You can't send a message fast enough to warn us ahead of time. The actual time/space event has to travel with the light coming from it.
Got back to Einstein's clock.
If I travel away from it at 1pm for 1 year at the speed of light, it will not have changed in all that time. From my perspective, the clock will still say 1pm even though its been ticking away constantly.
When I stop, I will see it start and continue on normally, although I will still be only seeing the clock in its earlier state.
Now swap the clock with a rabbit and start the experiment again.
I travel away from a fuzzy little rabbit at the speed of light for 1 year. After I've been gone 6 months, you go back in time to just as I was leaving and in a fit of bloodlust, you murder the rabbit and eat it raw
From my perspective out in space, the rabbit has not changed. In fact I won't have seen it move in the slightest because at the speed of light time stops. Now when I stop, I will see 6 months of the rabbit sitting there happily doing what rabbits do... BUT.. after 6 months, suddenly the ripple will hit me and I will be looking at a 6 month old partially eaten rabbit corpse and I will have the memory of you killing the rabbit and eating it. My 6 months worth of memories in which the rabbit was alive will be gone. |

Isnt it...
It has been proven that time is a demension... theres the X axis, Y axis, and Z axis, all of them make up the third demension right? well add a U axis or something, going the oposite way of the Z axis, and voila, you have the 4th demension... Time!
really it all has to do with speed, like Killad has been explaining. |

yeah four dimentions ... but if you include the different branches that could have happened from different events time would also be infinitely planar which means there would be 6 dimnetions |

There's a never ending supply of theories on how many dimensions the universe consists of. Time may very well be a surface rather than a line. If you include alternate realities then there are time lines that run parallel to our own. It has been suggested that they may be so closely packed together side-by-side that an event in one reality might produce an effect in another. It would be like cause and effect leaking out beyond our own time line.
e.g.
In reality 1, a sniper shoots Mr Smith in the heart and kills him.
In reality 2, the sniper misses but Mr Smith still drops dead from an apparent heart attack which was actually caused by the trauma of the bullet in reality 1.
Beatonator.. I just know you're thinking about Universe A and Universe 1 and the mongooses LOL. |
