About a few months back my computer started having problems with installing new software. There's some stuff I can install but then there's others where I can't. One time I tried to install The Sims on my computer and I got this error,

The InstallShield (iKernel.exe) could not be launched.
The RPC server is unavailable.

Anyone know how to solve this?

RPC - (Remote Proceedure Call) is a pretty important aspect of any windows machine.

Start ->Run
Type in 'services.msc' and hit enter.

In the list of services that appears scroll down to 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and make sure that it is...
1) Started
2) Startup Type is automatic.

If it is not started this is your problem.
A number of viruses target the RPC service and cause it to crash. Default reaction by Windows to this is to restart itself so this is unlikely unless you or someone else stopped this default behaviour in the service properties (Recovery Tab - all should be set to 'Restart the Computer')

Well thats your problem then.

Automatic means 'start when the pc is turned on'

If its on automatic and its not started... well its stopped at some point. Start it up and try again.

Could not start the DCOM Server Process Launcher service on Local Computer.

Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.

Stick your XP disk in the drive and when the autorun appears choose repair.
