I ran across this article on IGN when I was looking at Metroid 3 and Twilight Princess for Wii. I'm sure some of you have ran across this in your travels, but I thought I might bring this topic to the forefront and get some good (mature) discussions going.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://microsites.ign.com/kfc/top99games/index.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The list itself, is as you guessed, very much flawed and is on some points even ridiculous, ie:

#74: StarCraft (give me a break , second best RTS of all time.. 74?!)

#31: Super Mario 64 (how exactly does the game that revolutionized 3D gaming and MADE you buy a N64, deserve a 31 rating?! )

Really, what will those multitudes of 12-year-old, scratch-the-surface, gamers think of next... (I'm sorry I guess I shouldnt lump all 12 year olds into the same category, my nephew is 13 and has better taste in gaming than most adults... even if hes still too young to play most of the best games out there. )

Oh yeah, thats right, this is what those numskulls decide:

#9: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (cough-bull****, I know I really just pissed some alot people off right there but I'm sorry, I just think the game lacked the one thing that every classic title requires: Constructive Creativity. please, lets just leave it at that.. )

#14: World of Warcraft (do not even get me started here, I had to force myself to give this game up and CENSORED 4 months later I'm still not happy about it. some things are just more important... *sigh* anyway this title is in my top 5, and certainly not outside the top 10...dumb*** gamers...)

Anyway, on a more positive note I would like to highlight some of the very good picks on this overly dissapointing list:

#4: Chrono Trigger (if you have never played this game and are any kind of a RPG fan at all, you have no idea what your missing. buy it. dont have a SNES? buy that, then buy chrono trigger. those who have played the game know what I'm talking about. )

#10: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (enough said there, there is no comparison. period. personally I would have ranked 'a link to the past' much higher on my own list but hey, at least a 10 rating restored some of my faith in this list. only some, mind you)

Now #2 and #1, no doubt, deserve to be in the top 10, but I really dont think they warrant the spots they hold:

#1: Resident Evil 4, does not deserved this spot. (yes, great game but I gues I am more of a classic gamer and the 'resident evil' series was just never that to me. again I'm sure I stepped on a few more toes here, sorry.)

#2: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. (like I said, this titles does appear in my top ten but the #2 spot is not where I would put it. and thats just personal preference; nothing against the game itself.)

Now what really 'grinds my gears' is the absence of the following:

^^undoubtedly the BEST RTS of all time... if not the BEST game of all time...

^^ hours upon hours of breath-taking scenery and head-scratching puzzles.

^^even today Im still trying to figure out how RF missed the mainstreem radar as far as gameplay, storyline and modding. an instant cult classic for me.

^^only THE game that got me into pc gaming, not to mention the RTS genre.

Finally, I rejoice in the exclusion of:

^^*makes loud, obnoxious farting noise with much saliva and vibratory contemp* needless to say, this game "peeved" me terribly...

So what are your overall thoughts on this list and, most importantly, what games do you think should be added that were excluded??

hehe, thanks for wasting 5 mintues out of your day and reading my rant!

I agree with you for the most part. But why get so work up over a site that stoops so low as to advertising a KFC chicken sandwich?

wow that list sucks! It looks like they were really lazy with it. I mean Resident evil 4 is a really good game in all but its not THE best game there is. Actually I didn't even see the original resident evil or resident evil 2, or unreal tournament, or any quake games, oddworld, twisted metal, crash bandicoot, duke nukem 3d, and millions of others that I can probably list....I didn't even see one pokemon game...

I couldn't agree with you more. I only bought number two because I like the first one so much. RF2 was a total let down for me and many many other Red Faction fans that did the mistake of buying the game. The could have at least brought back Parker into the story line. The very least they could have made the female character way way more sexier than they were.

OK, can we make sure this thread doesn't turn into a 'RFII sucks' spamfest?

After looking at the list, I can give my opinions.

#98 (Ace Combat: Squadron Leader): Good game, yet surprising to see it.
#82 (Final Fantasy X): I expected it to be a bit higher.
#77 (Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow): I expected it to be a little lower.
#73 (TimeSplitters: Future Perfect): Needs to be quite a bit higher.
#68 (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty): Far too high.
#55 (Suikoden II): Needs to be way, WAY higher.
#51 (Fire Emblem): A bit lower than expected.
#49 (Jak 3): Definately lower than expected.
#45 (Burnout 3: Takedown): Should be in the top 20.
#42 (UT2004): Lower than expected, should be in the top 20.

Aside from these, I have no problems with how they are on the list, but the thing that is really annoying me about it is what they didn't have.

#86: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
I was surprised to see this game on the list but it's one of the better sequels out there that's better than the original in almost every way.

#75: Project Gotham Racing 2
I never had so much fun on Xbox Live until I played this...

#71: Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
Great story, great characters, great gameplay.

#68: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
I never beat the game before but I seen my brother finish it and from the looks of it, it's amazing.

#64: ESPN NFL 2K5
Best football game I ever played

#34: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
When I first played Vice City (which was almost 2 years after it came out sadly), I was amazed by its content. The massive world, all the things you can do in the game, the story, it was one of the best games I ever played.

#30: Shenmue II
Still havent beaten it on the Xbox yet (almost though) but it's been awesome so far. The exciting chase sequences, the frequent fights in the game. Sure the graphics arent that great but there's a lot of content in the game.

#18: Halo: Combat Evolved
I remembered the fun times when I would bring my Xbox to my friend's house for a System Link party with 7 people (we only had 7 controllers) fragging at Blood Gultch and Hang Em High. Good times...

#15: Metal Gear Solid
Amazing characters, gorgeous graphics for its time, memorable moments, it was one of my favorite games on the PS1.

The following list was created using reader review ratings for the 31,000 plus videogames in our extensive database. Your ratings were collected, compiled and arranged into this exhaustive list based on your user data up to April 11, 2005.

Basically stuff was rated the way it was cause of a buncha ratings made by fanboys, hence why all the over-rated games were so high.

That game list sucks. CommanderViper is right for the most part. That, and with the help of censored critics.

That list is a load of crap!

I think its pointless to make a top 99 list of games anyway, many games cant be compared, because they are way to different.

And Resident Evil on first place! thats ridiculous! I hate that game , I think first place should be Goldeneye for the N64.

Shenmue 1 & 2 are my favourite games, it is a open world where you can do pretty much whatever you want, and you have to work to get money.

Hopefully #3 will come out somewhen next year but no one has heard of anything

here MY top10 list for online gaming!

#1 Counter strike 1.6/source (best first person shooter)

#2 W.O.W (best role playing game although came close to diablo 2/lod)

#3 EVE online has to be mentioned its not perfected yet but I think its got a lot of potential

#4 LOTR (Lord of the rings need nice connection to play online but its fun to play)

#5 starwars

#6 battlefied online has blown into the top10 for me its well recommended by first person shooters but doesnt beat good old CSS

#7 Diablo 2 /lod ok old game but lets be honest we all spent a few years on this beauty

#8 starcraft/brood wars (ok its another battle.net game its old but its a great stragey game especially the star ship troopers maps and special forces !)

#9 red faction (great old first person shooter except with servers being limited admins are abusing there atuhority and causing dismay to what members there are left, but still gets a mention!)

#10 not much left to pick from for online gaming except C.O.H another first person shooter great grahpics but a little too slow for me.

hehe, someone doesnt like being scared.

sorry, but I disagree with you on Goldeneye being #1, I honestly think the #13 spot really isnt a bad place for it.

Also another game that wasnt on there that I really think should be is:

Just a thought, I know its not a terribly great game but its just one of those games that I use to play the hell out of and have so many great memories multiplaying with friends.

I mean cmon! who doesnt like the cerebral bore?!?!

Yeah well, nowdays when there is loads of games there is no point to make top100 of alltime games since they always something...

What I miss form this list is games like System Shock a game that was a decade ahead of it's time in technology... should be in top 10

Then how you can even talk about stealth action games and leave Thief The Dark Project off the list ??? a game that revolutionized the stealth action .

Outside those there is many games that would earn awads to be there
Oh and what comes to tense atmosphere I would say that Thief DS : Robbing the cradle mission is quite scary...

This my TOP10 since 1990.

There have been nice games before and I think I played them all throughout the 80ies (Woderboy, SimCity, Barbarian, Arkanoid, Asteroids aso...)

I like the games that did some kind of revolution - in a technical or storytelling or atmospheric way:

#1: MYST (1) my Mac seemed to explode in these times (early 90ies)
#2: Quake I (Mac), I couldnĀ“t stop until the nightmare level was finished...
#3: TEKKEN3 (PSI) so many girls played it as well - unbelievable
#4: Silent Hill I (PSI), the first game that shocked me in some parts...
#5: DOOM I (Mac), since it was a revolution in gameplay and fun.
#6: HalfLife I (PC) we all know, why this should be in any Top10
#7: Red Faction I (PC), geomod, great editor, perfect multi...
#8: Tomb Raider I (PSI) the first game my girlfriend shared with me...
#9: Half Life2 (PC), this has been the first game I stopped playing each day after one hour, because I was anxious about it could be over too sooon
#10: Shadow of the Colossus (PSII), the forgotten diamond of Computergames

yeah, whoever made this list definitely didn't take in account for many computer games ...

I would say that making a "best 100 games" list would be wayy to hard for a single group as large and as diverse as L4Y ... unless there was some sort of poll system .

but i would think that aiming for the top game engines would be alot easier to do ...

AOE does kick severe arse ... especially II ... not III so much, too many limits ...
