That is because of all the updates, system software, games, non-music stuff... ect... |

I was gonna get one of them but then decided that too many people have Ipods so i decided to get a MOS one instead (plus it came bundled with music)
It holds 899 MB.
Also its only a stand in until i can safetly afford a 20GB MP3 player. |

not to mention that drive makers always round off some of it ...
if you have a 1 gb drive it means you have 1000 mb, not 1024 mb ...

I bought this one:

in black a few months ago its a sony MP3 player/USB memory stick with a memory of 2 Gig I like it alot, altho the software takes some getting used to, its very easy to handle and alot less vulnarable than the I-pod, which I think aren't all the great as they are hyped to be, they scratch pretty quick their batteries run out to fast, they have strange software to put your Mp3's on your I-pod and most important you can't just plug them into any computer with an USB port to put files on them. |

Also remember Mostertman, that there are also a few music files that come originally ON the Ipod, so delete those, plus there are some empty files that you can delete while in Itunes that take up a little bit of space. Does it have an expansion port for a mini sd card?

The value you are seeing is the formatted size of the disk...
...Similarly...look at your HD space, its slighty less than the avertised value, becasue its formatted...
...Additionally, goober is correct as well, your iPod has games/ folders amongst other things which takes up space. |

MP3 players are too mainstream for my taste. I've got a Sony Walkman MD. MD stands for mini disk. Think small, thick floppy that hold about 2 CD's worth of music. Not alot you say? Well the disks are cheap and rewritable, so I can usually carry a dozen or so around at any time. |

ALL the Mp3 players that I have ever owned are made by creative Labs. The latest one that I bought was this Zen Touch 40g. Now they'd updated their Zen and NOW it has a color screen AND it has FM radio.

I have all my music on it and have never had it break down on me. I've had it for nearly 2 years now. I do feel like upgrading to the color Zen for three reasons:
1. I can download and watch videos on it.
2. Built in FM receiver that can come in handy for listening to music that you might not own yet.
Did I mention that you can even record either voice or directly from the built in radio receiver. I love the sound of my voice.
3. Getting tired of a co-worker showing off the album covers on his 30G color IPOD. |

Sony is the brand I trust for portable music (not much else, though). They were the first to deliver it and have had quality products since. |

They con(cheat) every 'none computer-literate' person this way! Nearly every company does it, when you get up above 1Gb those little extra 24's make all the difference! |

Yes. Ipod also has a 80G player. They are mostly that big because most never ones now play videos. |

my dad has one like this.
i bought an ipod because my fake ipod (2 GB, 100 €) was stolen+broken
but i bought an ipod nano 1G because of Ipod Linux + Rockbox and
stuff, also us europeans ipods have capped volume. so it cant go very high, with the 1G you can uncap this. but i love it.
IpodLinux:
1.lets you watch videos on your ipod NANO
2.Lets you play some cool games like DOOM(iDoom) and HALF LIFE
3.Lets you play Gameboy True an emulator called iBoy |

So basically it's just Linux designed to work on an iPod. Nothing new there. The main reason I don't have an iPod is because it forces you to use iTunes along with it. I'm a big fan of keeping my HDD clean from crap, so no iPod for me. |
