I woke up this morning to find this topic.

Potentially Habitable Planet Found!

I was amazed when i saw the title, and even more amazed when i kept reading.

This discovery could acually be the one thing that changes the world forever.

What's everyone's opinions?

Just saw it on TV

I heard it takes the light 20years to travel from earth to it.

So not very useful for human living
It means that it would take 20+years for a spaceship that travels with lightspeed..and thats impossible anyway.
We would need a spaceship to live on for many generations. Doh that's no life.

As far as habitibility is concerned - there was no mention if Gliese 581 is part of a binary star system. If there is a sister star, that could complicate things.

The good news, red dwarves are fairly stable long burning entities. So if we did take the 20 light year voyage it would likely be there when we get there.

The chemistry of the planet concerns me tho. Those oceans that have been alluded to - is it water or is it something like ammonia?

Its hard to speculate, I need more information.
I have suffered in real life for the past couple years, now its your turn!

a lightyear is a measure of distance, not time o-o

true, but using the speed of light we can determine that it would take 20+(including acceleration) years to get there ...

there are alot of theoretical engines that could reach half the speed of light ... the closest of which we are producing is the solar sail ... but thats still a 80+ year journey round trip ... and at that speed and distance radio communication would be impossible

I don't think that we would be even close to being able to build a generational ship ... it would

I think that insanity wouldn't be a stranger ...

I think we have a better chance terraforming mars first ... we simply haven't developed enough to do stuff like that ...

True, you read that on wiki, right?

That planet is 20lightyears away, that means if somebody jumped on it it takes 20years until we can see him jumping while looking at him from earth.
But travelling with lightspeed is something different, I forgot about the time, it'd slow down for the passengers who travel at lightspeed, and speed up for the people on earth. Oh well, I don't understand that but thats a fact

When that happens we must never let a corporation called Ultor take control over it.
No...wait, there will be Parker, anyway.

100 years is so small compared to mankind.
Send a crew of famillies and let them reproduce in space. Their children will reach the destination.

Actually, if that is the planet I'm thinking of, which was codenamed, Planet X at the time, then it's old news. Known about it for around 1 1/2yrs or longer now. I believe since '04 or '05. Funny how they now bring it up to light.

Well, the "planet x" that it was so-called, was supposedly able to sustain human life, as well as having a red dwarf for a star. I dunno, this one could be a totally different planet.

You don't know that... Scientists and theoretical physics don't know that for certian either because none of them have actually tried it.
