uuuh, it varies from game to game.
And 1024X768 is FAR from max.
New games can easily go to 1600X1200 |

I always go 640*480. The only time i don't is when my brother forces me to play games in it becuase if i dont he will beat me senseless and change it back anyways. I cant stand games unless they run 60 frames. So if 800*600 goes under 60 at any time i will go lower my res. I just cant stand a jumpy game. |

I usually run my games at 1280x1024x32 or 1600x1200x32 except for Red Faction. I keep it at the default 640x480 because otherwise the higher resolutions make things worse in the game like the servers list, the HUD, the chat, etc.
And the mouse is a MSoft optical intellimouse WITH a cord. Between the lag between the mouse and reciever, the interference with my 802.11G wireless, and the batteries needing replaced, I can't stand wireless mice. I tried to like it, but it went bye bye. |

640 x 480 is about usual, although I did manage to run Max Payne 1 and Half-Life at 800 x 600 without too much mishap
Still, for games like Red Faction and Serious Sam I have to play at 640 x 480 (although some of the golden oldies like Quake, Malice, (conversion for Quake that is truly excellent) and Duke Nukem 3d let you choose really weird resolutions). |
Desperately in need of an upgrade!

1024*768 normally. Planetside I play in 1152*something (I forget )
Older games I usually play in whatever it'll let me. 2048*1536 is a very nice res to play in |

I'd be surprised if your monitor handles that. It maxes out mine and this is an industry-leading 22inch monitor from NEC.
This said, I prefer 800x600 with 2x FSAA rather than 1024x768 or 1280x1024 without anti-aliasing.
