Extreme sadness in the Trump household.  My 2 yr old HP 7700 series appears to have crapped out. It boots up like normal, but by the time it gets to the login screen on Windows it freezes. Sometimes, itt has actually stayed running long enough for me to log in and my desktop shows up but then it freezes. My video card is fairly new and looks in good shape. My guess is the motherboard, but would welcome any other opinions. |

when computers freeze like that the more obvious part choices aren't always correct  ...
i once had someone who brought in a PC that wasn't getting to the Bios screen ... turns out it wasn't booting because of a faulty modem card  ... |

Well that ain't too specific information...
It would be good if you can tell that does it give some exact error message or does windows goto "blue screen of death" ? and what is said in it ?
Freezing can be caused by so many different reasons that it is hard to start to quess... |

It does exactly what I said. No error messages, no blue screen...just freezes during the bootup process. Like I said it acts like it starts up normal, I can see the window screen and sometimes can get as far as my desktop then it freezes.

Have you ever reinstaled Windows in the entire two year period you've had it? If not that'd be the first thing I'd try. No use throwing away hardware if the problem is in the software. If you're not sure how to install windows, here's a how-to article you may find useful. The best option, though, is finding someone experienced and have them install it instead; better safe the sorry.
Edit: It just occured to me to mention that you should probably backup your important data first. In this state the only way to do so would be to remove the hard drive, install it onto another PC and manually copy all of the files. |

ok, why is it that people always resort to reinstalling windows ... it seems if they get something as miniscule as a tracking cookie they resort to reinstalling windows  ... its just excessive and time consuming ... |

Hi ya Trump!
If your pc is trying to get to the boot up screen then your motherboard is most likely fine. (After all it is posting). The video card would not cause this either. What this could possibly be is an overheat problem with the cpu. Cleaning the heat sink under your fan can greatly help. If you have pets , all kinds of nasties can get in there to block airflow. Another thing you can check is ,boot in your bios and check your CPU fan rpm and see if it is surging are spinning to slowly. Hopefully it hasn't overheated for too long . |

A reformat and installation of Windows XP only takes around 1hr, if that. But meh, it's honestly the ONLY way to 100% get rid of certain things, such as viruses. |

If the fuel gauge on your car read "E" would the first thing you suspect be a faulty part?  Windows is having problems, but the hardware works fine after POST (from what we've heard); I suspect Windows. Installations can get corrupt, and assuming it's a two year old installation it's not unlikely. Besides, as Sobe said, reinstalling will only take one, maybe two hours tops. |

Hya. Do u have 1 HD split up in 2 or more parts ? C - D ..
Do u have full XP discs or preinstalled XP version ?
Whats ur disc space ? 80 gig , 100 or what ever ?
Do u kno how mutch space u used on any partition ?
I think u have a lot on the HD u like to keep lol , so we
find a way to save all u have and make sure ur pc runs
smoothly soon. However as said before , give us some
details.

backupp >? lol

it would if i just put in 12 gallons  (lol, that actually happened to me ... it turned out that i had to redo the solider in the gauge cluster )

well, in this case its like the car needs an oil change and you are going to completely overhaul the car, it would fix it ... but it would be more of a pain in the CENSORED  ... don't forget all the software and drivers
i know there are some viruses that are really bad ... and those are the worst case scenarios ... and it is true that some viruses you cannot completely remove but most viruses you can at least disable/remove ...
All im saying is try the little/less costly/less time consuming solutions first ... i once caught my dad cutting up the wiring in the engine to fix a ignition problem ... i took a look around the car and found that a ignition timing censor broke loose ... the part cost 7 dollars ... the work to rewire the engine was much much more costly
it seems people have a tendancy to assume the worst when it come to technology  |

Try by making a new account for your computer i had a problem with Explorer getting stuck at using over 50% of my CPU all the time, i managed to fix this by making a new User account
oh sry didn't see that he said that it got stuck at the Login Screen... |

I don't mean merely reinstalling RF on a partition, I mean a full format, then install of XP and all the other stuffz. |

Well, it turns out the problem was with the DV output for the video card. I have a dual out video card switched over to the Analog VGA and it's been working fine. 
I did a thorough cleanout for good measure so hopefully it will stay running.
