After seeing our poor fileserver transfer 1.5Tb of data in a month (), for the past 3 months () we've restricted downloading to registered users.
Registering for an account is free and simple, once you've got your account you can use any of the features on the site such as the Community Development Centre or the Forums.

Thats a good idea though. MOST other sites you do have to register on. So its only fair really.
Garner is right in doing this i think, It will mean some people (like me normaly) wont bother downloading whatever the file is from here, they will just go somewhere else. But meh its only temporary right? |

Nope, the new site was designed to have user registration for downloads.
That was decided about 6 months ago, the sheer traffic we're getting now has meant it had to be put in ahead of the site update... |

Go Garner! Woo! I knew this would happen eventually hence my account being opened when it was!
Edit: I also noticed you got rid of the members list option! Whats up with that? Making more room? |

I think that's an excellent idea, Garner. I think it will definitely draw people into the forums, even if its only to say how upset they are over having been required to get an account.
Apparently it is working, cuz when I check who's online, I don't recognize anyone, lol. |

Good idea. But though it will restrict the downloading only to registered users, I hope they just don't register just to download, but to also coerce and frolic within the forums as well. |

So do the guests just get to look at at the downloadable files? Take it there is something in place to say "To download this file you need to register for an account"
Still, like I said its a really good idea |

Because this has been implemented in the quickest way possible, there is no advance warning about the user account requirement.
People can browse for files as a guest but as soon as the download button is clicked the site hits a user restricted area and throws an error if you're not logged in.
The standard error is something like, 'you cant access this page as you're not logged in. please login or register (link provided)'
This way it was just a case of adding the one line into the download script that tells the site the page is users only |

More people who register = more people who register.
The only small modification is more space taken by the account database.
Until not far ago Garner was fiercely opposed to the need to register in order to download, wasn't he. |

that tends to change when your site pumps out 1.5tb of downloads in a month |

Yup, when we switched to U3 almost 2 years ago I stated the site would never require an account to download.
Well times change and as Outlaw states, things tend to change when the site goes from 300Gb a month to 1500Gb |
