Server Shenanigans
Posted Mar 12th, 11:12pm by Garner
Short Version : The site will be experiencing downtime and 'funkiness' for approximately 48 hours from 11:00PM EST Sunday 13th March.

Thats starting about 28-29 hours from now therefore.

Long Version :
11pm EST marks the time that this server is being moved from one location to another. Our host is moving one of their datacenters so the server has to move...

Now we had taken the opportunity to upgrade the server, little more power, more harddrive space etc... and to have that server up and running in the new datacenter and to switch over so you wouldn't actually notice any downtime.

Yet despite emailing the sales department of our hosts and getting a response and confirming the cancellation of this server, they forgot to mention that we still had to place the order with them seperately via their online ordering system.

Rar! Silly me, I'd forgotten that a sales department doesn't actually do any work!

So the new server is finally ordered (once the misunderstanding was realised) but naturally wont be ready in time for the server move.

So the server will be down for up to 6 hours from 11pm EST Sunday.

Almost immediately after that we'll be switching to the new server, which itself wont cause any downtime but will mean that for the 48 hours the DNS changes will take to propagate around the world the site wont be updated because otherwise the new server will become out of sync with the old one.

Dont you just love it when things work?

As a side note, this will only affect the site server. File server is located at yet another datacenter and at this time will not be moving.

Eh it's not that bad. New servers might mean faster download times and not to mention an expanded archive collection.

DNS is your ISP.

Ok time to get technical

When you type in www.levels4you.com into your browser, it sends a request to your ISP's DNS servers which turn www.levels4you.com into the IP address of this server.

When we switch servers and I update the master DNS server, your ISP will still have the old IP on their DNS server for up to 48 hours after the change. It all depends on how often they update their DNS records and who from.

Those IPS's that directly update from the master DNS servers will probably only be affected for a few hours, whilst ISP's that update from other 'parent' ISP's will take longer.

Welcome to the way the net works, its designed this way so that the 2 DNS servers for the site are not soley responsible for the DNS issues on the site, they'd be overloaded pretty damn quickly.

As for files - they wont be changing. To clarify what I said in the news post the only server changing is the one that serves the actual site - ie what you're looking at now.

We have two servers and the other server does all file transfers, this one does the site.

We're going to look at moving the fileserver to the same datacentre as this server... right now they're in two seperate locations but the new datacentre has the option of 100Mbit ports which is obviously 10x the speed the file server is currently on. Not to mention the file server right now is full...

and yeah if we get the old hot topic bit back that would be cool.

is the new server due to the donations?
Meh...

Nope, its because we had to move the server anyway and took the opportunity to swop servers at the same time.

At least in theory it was meant to be that...

Basically over the last year our host has dropped their prices. This current machine we're on now would cost $10/mo less if we simply reordered the same machine.

Therefore we took the decision to up the server slightly.
