I want to make a boat rock back and forth realistically. I got it to rock one way, but when it when it comes back to rock the other way, it "spasms", like comes up and jumps back and forth. I have a key + auto trigger, rotate on axis checked, with departing and returning time at 4 s. Any ideas?
Thanks ahead of time!

Making a rocking boat wouldn't be the best idea for RF. Since players can't correctly collide with rotating movers anaways... Most likley resulting the player clipping through walls, falling through the floor. etc.
Unless you do it the really really ghetto way.... make the entire boat a mover, toggle no collide, then stuff invisible collision blocks throughout the ship.
also try experimenting with the keyframe type to ping pong, loop, etc... that probably should fix it. |

It wasn't mentioned wether you wanted players to be able to walk on the boat... If not then you should have no problems, But like D2k said.. Soon as you you try to walk around on the rotating mover you will have to counter the bugs using invisible faces which work as a fix.
Spikey has in the past been relatively successful in acheiving a similar creation (a turning tram) While such discoveries allow for less limitations in RED, I myself try to work well within RED's limits.. Keep everything simple like Volitions default maps. |

Well, I talked to Spikey, he doesn't know what I should do. I DO want players to collide. And it works, I can be ON the boat, but it just has a moving problem. I played with the looping, etc. Still didn't work, actually made it worse :S And btw, default maps are boring, and if any of you are Mario fans, then you'd see why I want this

It never fails that when it comes to RED, Ninja repeats my same words using his own and adding bits of useless annoying information. As well as claims often never backed up by proof. |

I DID see that with one of the maps in the RF Competition, the one with the train that the mapper made the whole map spin around to make the train look like it was moving. But, I'm not sure that would work. I will give it a shot though, I'm actually kind of desperate. The map I am making is a remake from an old N64 game, so the rocking boat is actually one of the main attractions of this map. But if need be, I will just say, "screw this." It might just be a bit advanced for Red Editor. |

well, you don't have to settle for rocking back and foruth. you use try a up and down motion for the boat. Which would be less buggy with player collision than ratation.
hmm, you know, if you want it to rock back and foruth properly you can try using 2 different rotation keyframes, or 3 or 4 if needed to properly create this motion. Mabye I could experiment for you. Ill screw around with RED to see what I can come up with tomorrow. |

I found Ninja's post to be neither useless or annoying... it was actually informative for me- I have a larger idea of what's been attempted... it's good to get some confirmation from multiple mappers. But I may have underestimated how much this post might have been humor....

The advice of keeping things simple can be quite beneficial at times because the overall form of a map is important to consider, as well as small details... it reminds me of how an artist would approach drawing a figure... you start out with simple shapes and eventually built up the fine detail when all the structure is satisfactory..

|
But Lightstrike, I was not giving advice as such.. Just stating how I personally like to map..
Well It wasn't confirmed until after D2k posted wether the "Topic starter" actually intended for the boat to be accessable... But yet D2k still makes an attempt to explain the whole process anyway and quite badly I might add.. |

In all fairness, a 360 degree repeating turn is very easy, while a non-360 degree rock is'nt. |

I figured that out real quick. I got it to rock one way perfectly, but on its way back, and freaks. I change and few settings, and I can make it spin around and around, a rather funny sight, lol. |

Here, i did some experimenting and here is what I came up with to best re-create a rocking motion. I couldn't rely on the event alone and had to use delay events to create a loop. Multiple rotation keys on the same brush causes the one before it to break.
Also, take note that the boat has been pre rotated 15 degrees and that the keyframe is set for 30 degrees. i suggest manually moving the boat off grid to put it into position only after its completley done.
as for the play sound... when i was testing i wasnt even sure the events were resetting so i played that sound to confirm.

Ah you reminded me of Half-Life Faction. It has been handed over to some other people who might be able to develop it more better than I could . People who know how to use 3D max Studio's and such.
There progress is unknown at this time. |
