December 04, 2003 - Atari announced today that it will be releasing a very special Special Edition of Unreal II, featuring not only the original single-player experience, but an Expanded Multiplayer mode which they're calling XMP. Unreal II: The Awakening Special Edition is expected this December 9.
"Unreal II: The Awakening was one of the most anticipated and celebrated single-player first person shooters of the year, but fans have been hungry to play against one another online," said Steve Allison, vice president of marketing in Atari's Los Angeles studio. "Unreal II: The Awakening - Special Edition will deliver the same epic single-player game to those who may have missed out, along with the all-new multiplayer mode fans have been waiting for."
The XMP mode is an all-new multiplayer mode which adds vehicles to the Unreal II weaponry to give players a chance to cooperate and annihilate in classic Unreal style.
Current Unreal II owners need not worry, as the Expanded Multiplayer features will also be available as a free download, beginning the day that the Special Edition is released.
