Just curious as to the thoughts of people here on the LHC(Large Hadon Collider) project.
http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/
The world's largest and most expensive($10 billion) particle accelerator.
This machine will be turned on within 2 days time. It will be active on Wednesday unless the next court hearing tomorrow gets the human race another year before this machine sees the light of day.
There are many thoughts on this project, some being that it will enhance our physics knowledge. Others state it will create mini black holes and create another big bang, ripping apart all the particles from earth. Hell, even a few scientists that were working on the LHC said that it had a possibility of creating miniature black hole when turned on.
With this in mind, what are the opinions or thoughts of those on L4Y about this.
No flaming please, everyone is entitled to an opinion |

My thoughts are that we have a greater chance of getting hit by a comet in the next 2 seconds then this thing doing us any harm. (Besides the money put into it possibly being wasted) |

I dunno, personally I think it's just going to be turned on and all will be fine. But, never know, lol.
Lots of people are going quite nuts over the fact that the world may be sucked up into a black hole, lol. |

has been discussed over, here.
there were the same concerns when they start building colliders, when they blew up the first atomic bomb. So many risks are taken because we don't know what it's going to happen if we do something for the first time. That's the principle of an experience. The first man that put fire to a log may have risked to burn the whole earth or at least he didn't know it wouldn't happen.
You cannot always know what will happen next. There is only one way to know, try it. |
