Warner Bros. and Monolith have revealed first details on the The Matrix Online's player vs. player combat system. While we already know there will be plenty of action in the game, as the three Organizations -- Machines, Merovingian, and Zion -- fight to share territory during a cold war. However, this is the first we've heard on how combat will work between two non-NPCs. PvP will come in three flavors:
The primary mode of PvP action is the Duel. At any point, barring certain minimal restrictions, you can challenge another player in your faction. During the duel, both players can only target each other. The duel ends when one player is defeated, surrenders, runs away, or is killed by an outside force.
You'll also be able to engage in Team vs. Team Duels, where a group of up to eight players can take on another group in a fight similar to the one-on-one duel.
Finally, The Matrix Online will offer PvP Constructs. Constructs are "pocket worlds" existing outside the Matrix. A particular Construct, The Archive, exists to allow players from different factions to duke it out. Each factional Organization will have a safe home base in the Archive, from which members can gear up for the PvP action.
Not only will the Archive serve as an arena for fighting between factions, but it will house important secrets -- remnants from an older Matrix -- for those strong enough to overcome other players, as well as the Archivists themselves.

What good games has it had? Enter the Matrix was released before it was even finished. Ruined Shiny's good rep. I am interested in this game even though I thought the 2nd and 3rd films were a bit pap.
It is due out Q2 of next year but that could well be wrong. |

I didn't hate the game though it was a let down. Loved Animatrix! Didn't really like Matrix 2 & 3 much but these game concepts for Matrix online sound awesome! |

Cool concept for the fighting but how will it be done? This is an RPG style game after all. I've seen so many different styles of battle and from what I've seen and heard, I'm guessing its gonna be turn-based fighting. Can that really capture the essence of The Matrix? Some say yes, but I dont see why. Don't get me wrong, I love RPG's as much as the next guy but I'd much rather see a Real-time fighting system.
As for the "pocket worlds", that's also a really good idea considering those really existed in the movie (remember the white room with all the guns? ). Having one for the seperate factions is cool but I'd really love to see if they will implement the creation of your own personal little "pocket". This would work especially well seeing as how my saying will most likely apply: "Where there's a multiplayer online game, there are clans, and where there are clans, there are homepages." |
