Hey Guys/Gals

I have a 99 Hyundai Elantra and its been running fine for like a year straight ( with no problems) All of the sudden Yesterday morning i went out to go start it to get ready to go to work and It just turns over and it acts like it wants to start but it wont. I did turn the key only to find out if the fuel pump would kick in and it didn't. So my question is do yall think it could be just the fuel pump or maybe a relay switch somewhere? i tried looking for ( even if there was one for it) a fuse, But there is not one for the fuel pump.

You guys got any ideas?

I have a half of a tank of gas btw.

Maybe you left your lights on or something and your battery has gone flat now.. That's a pretty common problem I find anyway..

BTW my car has a fuel pump relay, and a fuse for the fuel pump..

Well i thought about that , but if the battery did not have nay juice then it would not try to crank over.. but its still trying to crank.

Takes a fair bit to start an engine though.. Flat batterys will still 'try' to crank over but fail..

Usually you can eliminate It from being a problem If the battery sounds like It has enough juice..

If its going chuchuchcuhhuchcuchuc .. Then Its probably a good battery..

But If its going . chu .... chu ..... chu ... chuu..... then maybe its too flat to start the motor..

Don't forget, it could also be a clogged fuel filter that could be preventing the fuel from passing through.
1. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?
2. Can you smell any gas?
3. Are you getting spark from your distributor?
4. If it is your still think it's your fuel filter.
>a. Check to make sure you are getting power to the fuel filter.
>b. If you are getting power to it then disconnect your fuel line and see if any gasoline pours/shots out of the file after the pump.
I just hope that your fuel pump (AKA sending unit ) is not located inside the fuel tank, because that would require you taking down the tank to replace the "sending unit". Calling it a sending unit just means it's going to cost more to replace. I still prefer them in the front where the motor (engine) is located. I'm old school that way.
5. Buy AMERICAN preferably a Chevy (or any GM car).

How are you verifing the fuel pump is not coming on? Could you hear it before?Check out your fuel pump relay behind the driver dash. Also 100,000 miles is about the limit on a fuel pump

Answer: Its a Hyundai

I have owned 2 Hyundai in the past ( A Excel and a Accent) and both have given me problems, I have a 1965 MkIII Ford Zodiac which i have had better performance from and has given me no problems and my Mitsubishi Galant has given me no problems either

Perhaps it's the timing belt or timing chain?

I've seen this happen quite a few times and it just happened to be a timing belt. Just a suggestion.

My scenario a few weeks ago was....

The fuel pump went out, so it filled my engine with gas...I changed the fuel pump and furl filter....along with changing the oil and oil filter...runs like a beauty now.

I you cant hear the pump prime when to turn it on ACC (one before it cranks) then most likely it will be the fuel pump fuse. if that's ok the the next thing to check is the relay. if all seem good there, then check the wiring connection of the pump/fuel tank pump plate. And after all that fails, then look at wiring to/from pump to ECU. the absolute last resort should be replacing the pump. They are very expensive you know

Might I add if the problem turns out to be not fuel pump related. Try taking a look at your coil pack and/or crank angle sensor. If any of those 2 are faulty then your car will crank but will not start.

because taking to a mechanic can be way too expensive.. If you can do It yourself then you save alot of time and money..
