Next-gen console and PC game will be at ATI's booth but will not be Max Payne 3.

Remedy today announced that its next game will be on display at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. The Finnish developer is most well known for creating the noir Max Payne series, the most recent being 2003's Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Though no details or release dates have been announced, the company has let it be known that the game "is targeted for the next generation of consoles and PCs."

The game will be shown in a theater at the booth of ATI Technologies, maker of high-end graphics cards. "We're taking the graphics to the next level, pushing the envelope on the visuals, and thus cooperation with ATI has been excellent," said Markus Maki, Remedy's development director.

To help the game achieve Remedy's lofty goals, the developer is funding the game itself. Says Petri Jarvilehto, lead game designer, "For a small, independent developer we are in a rare position of being able to maintain our own vision of what a perfect game is about. We are uncompromising and passionate about our work."

The new game will not be the third chapter in the Max Payne series. According to a statement today, the company has "kept a strict focus on the pre-production of a new game franchise of their own design." (emphasis added)

While many would have presumed that the game will be part three in the Max Payne series, other hard evidence suggests otherwise. Though Max Payne 3 has been confirmed by publisher Take-Two Interactive, the announcement of the game mentioned nothing about a developer. Adding to the doubt is a clear message on Remedy's Web site. Just beneath the company's logo and name reads a simple statement, apparently directed at inquisitive minds regarding Remedy's next game: "It'll be something new."
