Could anyone tell me if there's any truth behind the claim that Max Payne 2 isn't as modable as Max payne 1 ?........Cheers.

Well yeah bit, there's alot of boring colission factor's in mp2 (if your making a kung fu mod)
Cause when the player gets to close to a npc the npc would simply walk away. and thats realistic enough, but sucks when u a running towards one, and trying to land the jump kick, and then suddenly he moves away before the hit projectiles are even out.

And mp1 was easier on the coding side definately, because to achieve the same system maddie and ken_y had for katana and trw you would have to make massive maxed2 coding, so the system would only work in custom maps and not in normal maps, and that ruins the fun.

The reason I ask this question is ( as you might or might not know ), i've been working on a project for MP1 based on the movie DAWN OF THE DEAD for some time now. But I keep having people ask me why are you doing this mod for MP1 & not MP2, as MP2 has far better graphics.

Well the reason behind this is that, I bought MP1 before MP2 & started my mod with it, but then I later found out that MP2 had an improoved gamming engine. But by that time I had already gone quite some way with my mod, & because I also came to the MP1 modding scene quite a bit later then most other modders ( in fact when the comunity was probably on it's last legs), there was far more information ( i.e user made tutorials ), not to mention free user made prefabs avalible for me to use to help me with my mod at that time, then there was for MP2, & i'd also heard that MP2 was also far less modable then MP1 anyway.

However, just lately i've been loosing a bit of heart in my mod, not only because I am constainly being asked the afore mentioned question, but also because the MP1 comunity is dead on it's CENSORED as the last mod to be released for it, that was the great Polar Paradise has only had 495 downloads from this site in 15 months. Plus there's the added problem that MP1 dosen't even work with the new windows vista operating system ( that a lot of people have now switch to ), without you having to make some major changes to it's sound files.

So it's got me thinking just lately, just who's really going to be out there to enjoy this mod when it's finished ?, i.e is all my hard work going to be in vain, & am I wasting my time ?, or should I switch my mod over to MP2, which I don't really want to do as there is just too much work to transfer over at this point in the game ( no pun intended ), & I probably ( as mentioned above ), won't be able to achieve half the stuff that I have up to now using MaxEd2 as I have with MaxEd anyway if I do try to transfer it over. Plus the MP2 comunity is almost as dead as the MP1 comunity anyway. Something that I hope will all change with the release of MP3 this winter, as perhaps this new chapter will bring new life to the previous chapters comunities.

To be honest i've seriously been thinking about switching over to HL2's Scorce Engine just lately, as there's a comunity that won't be dying any time soon as HL1's community is still alive & kicking to this day with various mods still being made for it, & that games 2 years older then MP1. Only trouble is that i've heard that the HL2's Scorce Engine is hard to learn to use, but MaxEd is fairly easy to use, & I really don't fancy the thought of having to learn another game engine.

Problems, Problems......... , What would you do ?

And yes you heard me right, there is going to be a MP3 out this winter, see this link:

I know what you mean, but at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself who are you making it for? Yourself or the community?

Its debatable whether the MP2 mod scene is dead or not. There is quite a few mods on the way that really look fantastic: Star Fox: Path of Fate and Vampire Slayer 2.0 looking completely unlike MP2.

Not only that, but I think people who are still making mods for MP2 are looking to do more than a new skin or a new weapon (not wanting to cause offence to the people who do do this). Quality over quantity if you see what I mean.

Also, with people like Andersen offering help and advice and even content for people to download to spur new ideas and whatnot, it can only be a further plus.

Anyway, I hope you stick with it man whatever you choose to do, Dawn of the Dead is my favorite zombie film (George Romero version that is) and the screenshots I've seen of your work look great.

I don't think that anyone would soley mod just for the comunity as modding is such time consuming work, so you've got to be able to enjoy it yourself also, to be able to stick with it.

I also wouldnt think that there is any modder out there that soley mods for themselves either, as I think that all modders have a yerning to share & show off their work to others, as like I said the process takes too long not to want to share your work after it's finished.

Also, compaired to other modding comunities MP1 & 2 are probably among the deadist, if not the deadist.

Totally agree with you. Unfortunately, me agreeing doesn't help you in your current predicament.

Although, in saying that. If you did switch to, as you said the Source engine. I'd guess there would be a lot of people who could help you out and you could maybe gain enough interest to get a team together.

Might be worth putting the feelers out? (If you haven't done that already that is)

Its a tough decision mate, but as a fact i see new comers here on the mp2 section atleast every 2 day. Many of the mods get downloaded rapidly still, these are the numbers for last week,

Bullet by Bazgrow(231 downloads since its release april 7th.)
Downloaded 146 times this week!

Cinema 2.0 beta by TerminX (24539 downloads since its release in 2004.)
Downloaded 44 times this week!

My Matrix V2.1 Full by Rocky5 (17210 since its release 2005.)
Downloaded 35 times this week!

The scene is not dead. But you are right, not alot of people are here anymore, but still there's fans that comes and downloads stuff without posting stuff on the forums. So because of that you shouldnt worry too much. And a look at your moddb site shows alot of people waiting for the mod aswell.

I say you should continue on the mp1 mod, as it has the best gameplay engine, and dawn of the dead is classic man same goes for mp1 so combining those 2 will make a masterpiece.
I say stick with max payne 1. You'll get a way better mod in the end of it all.

Cheers.

.
Having 3 or 4 people still modding for a community dosen't constitute a community that's not dead on it's CENSORED as most modding communities reach out globaly. So 2 or 3 people still modding for a global community is pretty dismal, & there's only me & 1 other in the case of Max Payne 1, & that other modder hasn't posted anything in the last year or more.

Also, a modding community is just that, a place where modders work on & disscuss their work with each other, so just because people are still downloading old mods at a regular rate also dosen't constitute that a community is not dead, as i've seen loads of sites where players are still downloading mods that were made for old retro games who's modding communities died maybe 20 years ago.

People will always be downloading old games or mods for thoughs games from the web to play & this in itself is no indication that a modding community isn't dead as most of the people that download mods to play are not modders themselves.

In short modding communities are just what it says on the tin, modding communities, not downloading communities.

Do what you want mate.
No ones forcing you to keep on the MP Engine.
But in my opinion you'll lose the classic style you have if you move it too source or MP2.
