I seem to be having an odd problem with L4Y as a whole, I think it may be DNS related:
When I go to http://www.levels4you.com the site doesn't load - I get a Page Load Error / Address Not Found in both FF and IE on my laptop and on my girlfriends too (so it's not to do with my pc).
If I remove the www. from all the links, eg I go to:
http://.levels4you.com/forum.l4y?do=view&t=230888
instead of:
http://maxpayne2.levels4you.com/forum.l4y?do=view&t=230888
then the page will load (without a stylesheet but I assume they are loaded through the maxpayne2. section of the link).
I thought I read somewhere in the PC section I think that Garner was moving the site/part of the site to a new server, that makes me assume that DNS hasn't updated but it's been quite a few days now. Also occasionally I've been able to load either the portal page or planetary command - but never both. I flushed my own DNS cache - can't find an option to clear my routers though.
I have to use a proxy to view the site and post so I'm guessing it is to do with my router/ISP's DNS? |

Yeah we did get a new server. Have you tried restarting your router I assume? |

Just use this IP 63.247.65.170 until your Internet provider gets an udated list from their DNS server. |

Second thing I tried was to restart the router, didn't make any difference unfortunately.
As for getting a newer router, I had a replacement installed a couple of months ago, besides I don't think I can use a different one since Tiscali (my ISP) pipes my TV through it.
Thanks Frank but I already tried using L4Y's IP address, only works for some pages. I can't follow links as they all lead to custom www. 's - not sure if I can change something in FF to let me get around that? |

Don't know much about FF, but I remember back when Facebook changed their site, viewing it through https instead of http allowed the site to be viewed via the old one. You got a grease monkey script that altered EVERY link to https even though they are set to http. Probably can get a script that does the same thing for ya. |

Here's something for you to try. Open a command prompt window with administrative rights. In the prompt type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit return/enter. This should clear the DNS cache on your PC. |

Not exactly what i meant I meant surely you can get a script that converts all L4Y "http://SECTION.levels4you.com into the IP. |

Yea I tried IE and then Opera, neither worked. Thanks assman but I already tried flushing my DNS, that (and the fact that other pc's on the network can't access L4Y either) is what made me realise it wasn't my pc but my network or ISP.
I've had a look through userscripts.org and plain googled but can't find a script that will do that beat, there's one or two that are similar but need editing for l4y, when I've edited them and try to install my customised version I get a JS editor error - never looked into making custom scripts for greasemonkey so not totally sure how it works. |

Become aware of a nameserver issue I'm looking into. Basically you can reach parts of the site your ISP already knew about but cant reach other areas of the site.
Its why I never realised the problem existed...
Mostertman for example is completely unable to visit. His ISP doesn't even know L4Y exists at all... |

If it is a DNS issue (and sounds like it is) you could change your DNS servers to other ones. It's possible your ISP's Name Servers havnen't received the updates (if there have been changes to L4Y's DNS). Most ISP's pick up changes rather quickly, some lag.
I'll occasionally change my DNS servers to the following AT&T Name Servers:
12.127.16.67
12.127.17.72
Make sure you keep record of your current NameServers so you can change back later. You can always check to see what L4Y resolves to with nslookup:
# nslookup
>server 12.127.16.67
Default server: 12.127.16.67
Address: 12.127.16.67#53
>maxpayne2.levels4you.com
Server: 12.127.16.67
Address: 12.127.16.67#53
Non-authoritative answer:
maxpayne2.levels4you.com canonical name = levels4you.com.
Name: levels4you.com
Address: 63.247.65.170
Good Luck |

Oh dear... this was a complete f up on all levels...
We used to have 5 DNS nameservers... 2 'in house', 3 backup run by someone else. With the number of domains I have 25+ it was too much hassle so the idea was to bring it all to the 2 'in house' name servers (by in house I mean under L4Y control)
As long as one nameserver works the sites it has DNS record for will be online so if one nameserver has issues it makes no difference. 2 nameservers is the minimum you need therefore just in case.
Sadly we hadn't realised before the switch off of the other 3 nameservers that of our 2 'in house', one was still pointing to a server that was removed from the L4Y family 6 weeks ago (oops) and the other was pointing to a server where the DNS server was refusing connections. Once the 3 backup NS's were removed of course... well you lot all began loosing the ability to visit!
Well one huge bitchslapping session later DNS servers are both online and responding to requests. Things *should* start getting back to normal. |

Yeah, back up to the normal visitor levels now. Dropped to around 20 visitors at any one time which was a surefire way of realising something wasn't right |
