Found these articles from Homelanfed. So I started reading and following them. I found them to be interesting, fairly accurate and informative. Thought maybe the rest of you would like to read them as well. Or at least look over the list and see what you think.
Quote | By Homelanfed: With an avalanche of first person shooters (both on the PC and in consoles) coming to stores in the next 12 months, we decided to take a step back and give our picks for the top 10 most important first person shooters of all time. Note that we did not say “best”. While there are games that are very entertaining and perhaps even better than the 10 we have picked on this list, our list of first person shooters contains the games we think advanced the genre, through things like features, graphics and other elements. All of these games happen to be good games, but they also inspired other games, game developers, publishers, and gamers to see what the genre could truly be. |
10 most important FPS list in chronological order:
10.BF 1942-(2002)
9. Halo-(2001)
8.Unreal Tournament-(1999)
7.Tribes-(1998)
6.HL-(1998)
5.Unreal-(1998)
4.Quake-(1996)
3.Duke Nukem 3D-(1996)
2.Doom-(1993)
1.Wolfenstein 3D-(1992)
Do you agree with the line up? |

I agree with it except for "Tribes" which I never played. And BF 1942. I just bought 1942 last week and I ain't getting into it. I know it was picked game of the year by one gaming mag. But so far I feel I wasted money.
Just my humble opinion. So screw off!

I have played all of them except halo -- and agree with the first 8 -- all contributed something inovative to the gaming world -- BF on the other hand is a cool game but doesnt belong on the list of top 10 in my opinion.
(funny thing is -- each of the first 8 were my favorite game at the time they were out -- lol) |

RF has not done any thing to advance any of the elements. |

Three games that should be there.
1: Red Faction (2001) Though it has been done before, this game was the first to properly use geo-mod. This allows for some of the best mulitplayer ever.
2: Star Wars Dark Forces II Jedi Knight (1997) Some may not classify this as an FPS, but it was one of the first games close to or in this category to include "powers".
3: Goldeneye (1996) Ah, the game to start the console shooters trend, and definately should make any list. Although I liked PD better, GE was a revolution for its time.
That's all folks! |

Goldeneye was the best game I ever had for the N64. Word.
(PCs are inexplicably better than consoles and will remain so for the foreseeable future, though.) |

BF is on there because it was the first to WELL incorperate Vehicles into a PC fps. |

I agree with 'em all.
I still love some of the Duke's in-game comments -
"It's time to kick [Censored] and chew bubblegum... and I'm all outta gum"
"Shake it baby!" |
Desperately in need of an upgrade!
