[quote] The Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA) announced today that all merchants belonging to the organization -- which includes most major game retailers -- will enforce a new initiative whereby Mature-rated games will not be sold to customers under the age of 17. The retailers, which include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Electronics Boutique, Blockbuster, CompUSA, KB Toys, and many others, will soon begin carding customers to confirm their age, when necessary.

Fair enough too!
What's the point of a rating system on the boxes if it isn't used?
Some will no doubt blab about the evils of censorship but the laws were put in place for all the right reasons.

What do they think, some 13 year old is going to go around murdering people or himself/herself because of a game. You have to wonder how long they would survive in real life because of that.
Parents should have the descision here what they think their children can and cannot play |

Sadly we could say that about ciggerets and liquor. Parents should watch their children and protect them from drugs and smokeing. But there are alot of things going on without parental concent. The government is probably thinking about it in this way... |

lol I bought my first R rated game last weekend and believe it or not it is Red Faction!
The M rating in New Zealand means 'Recommended for Mature Audiences 16 Years and Over' so is a lot different from the States. |

for children who have not been raised decently by their parents video games can be a contributor(not a CAUSE) to sociapathic tendencies.
My dad does Children's counselling, and has seen this effect first hand. |

I've personally been walking into movie theaters with R-Rated movies, by myself, since I was 12. Now, I'm not a small person, in fact, I've often been mistaken to be 3 years older than I actually am (I'm 16 on January 26) In stores, I often get credit card offers because they think I'm 18, I have a somewhat wrinkled face, but just the fact that I'm 6'3"-6'4" usually throws them off. I bought my first M rated game at 13 (Vietnam: Black OPS) and my first explicit CD was at a similar point in life. Now, my parents don't really care about what I watch or listen to. They would care if I suddenly started smoking weed, probably, but they don't care about what I listen or watch. Some people also think that age caps can somehow determine how mature a child is; really there is no age cap at all; I know plenty of people that are around 40 and have never grown up, they're just like a big kid, I'm more mature than they are and probably was when I was 13. I matured rather quickly, as most people have a tendency to do where I live (not everyone, but I think people mature faster out in the country, whether you grow up more around death with hunting or the fact that most people start real working at 12 years old, with getting paid and workers comp and unions and everything, its just some of these factors I think have to do with it). Rather, there is no way to determine what to sell anyone, you rather must take them at face value, which is way to hard because most people can put on a fake face long enough to buy what they want. Really, I believe there is no way to determine if a video game/ movie/ CD is appropriate for someone without taking a full-blown psychological exam and carrying around a little damn card that says you passed, which is going wayy to much overboard. Thus, there is really no way to determine if a video game/ movie/ CD is ready for someone at an age, because everyone matures at different rates. At any length, if some immature people saw what some rating really do have (Eternal Darkness for GameCube) they would probably be so mentally disturbed that they would think PeeWee Herman was straight. Really, I believe that ratings should continue, without an age cap however, if parents don't like that they should get off their lazy @ss's and see what their kids are doing and observer what they are doing instead of having some company decide how their kid behaves at a certain age. |

Once again the US is behind the rest of the world
All games here in the UK have always required proof of age to buy. Be it a 12, 16 or 18 game, if the person attempting to buy the game isn't over that age we cannot sell it to them.

They do here, if a 6 year old comes up and wants to buy an 18 game, as long as the parent says yes we can sell the game to the kid. Doesn't matter what the age of the kid is, as long as someone related to the person buying the game responsible for their upbringining says 'yes' we can sell the game as technically we're selling the game to the adult not the child... even though the child will probably be the one using it. |

yep i live in england and its a good policy, has to be said though me and my friends have brought an 18 game when we were about 14/15 without a parent, Game is slack maybe Garner served me! My mum doesnt mind if i buy 18 games as she knows im not a deranged killer, yet! same goes for music, I remember someone i knew was in foster care, and his foster parents wouldnt let him buy a CD as there was a Explicit sticker on it, she got the attendant to read through the book looking for swear words, and if it had more than 2 she wouldnt buy it...now come on! he was 15 at the time! ;/ im quite lucky in that respect. Garner do Game pay you to have banners on your site? jst curious or are you doing it as a favour to them? |

Hmmm. There is usually a bit of a hoo-ha about this kind of thing in America, usually co-incides with the latest juvenile shooting incident in which the dumb-arse kid says that it was "the evil influence of video games that made me do it" or some other such nonsense
I have yet to hear of the "video game defence" being used in the U.K. - perhaps someone can correct me
As long as most programme writers stay away from topic such as raping someone, abusing kids, kidnapping etc. then the usual slew of FPS games will escape too much censoring. The minute any one of the aforementioned crimes features large in the action you can expect a rash of civil actions to be brought Personally, they'd deserve it as well - somethings are not meant to be the subject of a "game".

Good Day McBain,
Usually they end up taking they're own lives then they find out he was addicted to some game.
Thats how I have heard it go before.
If the world was perfect there would be no FPS, just games like Lemmings where they always survived |
