[quote] The Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA) announced today that all merchants belonging to the organization -- which includes most major game retailers -- will enforce a new initiative whereby Mature-rated games will not be sold to customers under the age of 17. The retailers, which include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Electronics Boutique, Blockbuster, CompUSA, KB Toys, and many others, will soon begin carding customers to confirm their age, when necessary.

@ Monk!
Next up:
- a bloke who played Donkey Kong and used it as an excuse to bash gorillas over the head with a mallet
- a PacMan addict who ran around a stately home biting people claiming that they were "ghosts" and he'd just eaten a "power pill"
- a student who was nabbed releasing hundreds of frogs onto the M25 claims that years of playing Frogger convinced him that they'd make it across without getting squished
Apologies for going "off-topic" there, but Monk's comment struck me as funny and I wondered if there were any other seemingly innocent games that could lead to mayhem |
Desperately in need of an upgrade!

And Folowing:
A depressed teenager who done nothing but play too much Soldier Of Fortune decides to grab the shotgun out of his dads locker and takes the gun to a local shopping centre to remove some limbs.
An irritated Counter Strike player decides to build an arsenal of weapons to go counter terrorist on his school-colleagues.
A group of Afgans see it fit to use Microsoft Flight Simulator to cause one of the biggest civilian catastrophies in america by using the aeroplanes as manned rockets. |

IF they kill themselves or others from games, how do you think they would have survived in real life without the games?? (sad fact)

The first two were examples, but the 3rd one was a real example of it.
You know as well as me this does happen, and don't you think the gun culture in games could lead them to go and use a real one? |

That's caused by a thing called DEPRESSION. It can be avoided by help from others. Games dont cause violence, people do.
What next?? are they going to take away mature games from the people that already have them.
I was thinking the gaming community would speak out against this because of the lowering amount of gamers in red faction and others. |

Your five second guess that student-killing is caused by depression is short, You are right that people cause violence, but people are usually driven to violence by people.
It isn't just depression which causes such outbursts. It is people as well.
Would we have any of this sort of thing if there were no FPS games? Hell I enjoy a shoot'em'up. But what if there wasn't any of these games for children to muse themselves with, how do you think it would be? would kids still go out and massacre other kids at school because they got sucked into the game so deeply?
How was it before there were computers? was there any of this school massacre? I think not.
A lot of violence could be blamed on the screwed up world we live in, The street culture I put a lot of blame on this, There are people on the street that would see no problems with beating you to the ground to steal your mobile phone or posessions, the world is a messed up place.
Humans are so stupid when you think about it, Our instincts are those of animals who will fight and kill for the most insignificant of things. Sometimes to just make a point, Ignorance and stupidity. |

I agree with you.
No Computers, though, werent the cause of no student/minor violence. The reason was, there just weren't as many guns back then. They had almost no people that some minor could steal guns from. |

After WWII you think there wasn't guns laying about?
Back then there must have been more guns than today.
But that is going back whey too far.
So you are saying computers have nothing to do with it? nothing to do with them taking a gun to school or several to massacre unarmed students and teachers? |
