Hello,
I require some technical assistances on a small issue I have regarding my desktop icons.
---Fault Description---
Windows 7 is failing to remember the positions of my icons on my desktop when I boot up my computer. I can move my icons around on my desktop and set them in a nice tidy order, but when it comes to rebooting my computer or shut down and coming back to start it back up, they go back to a messy way which I do not like.
This only recently started when I purchased a new Graphics card for my PC and installed it.
I have un-installed the previous drivers for my old card off my system so ATi is not on my computer any more, after the un-installation, I removed my old card, placed my new one in and installed the Nvidia drivers for my new card.
Ever since this, I have had the icon trouble. At first, I was getting an error message when booting up "Windows could not load MON.Independencies because one of its processes were not found or have been un-installed" The error message is something like that, but I managed to get rid of the error by running a ATi Un-install application from Guru.com.
This check's your computer for any remaining ATi drivers and removes them completely.
Does anyone have any suggestions they could give apart from the following:
1) Re-install Windows
2) Remove all desktop icons because having icons clutters things (I prefer desktop icons)
3) Amend or delete Registries (Already tried the following help from http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1164536.htm
Thanks for your help! |

I had the same issue before but it stopped after a few restarts not sure why
Try pressing F5 for a few seconds on the desktop and rearrange the icons the way you want them and try a restart after that, let me know if that worked. |

It's a long shot, but desktop icons can be prevented from changing via restricting user accounts. I don't know about Windows 7, but with Windows XP there's a file in the users directory that controls icon placement. I don't recall what it's called off of the top of my head, but I know that if icon placement is enforced the file will have the .man extension. If icon placement is not enforced then the file will either not be there or have a different extension. |

Thanks for all your help guys, I am currently trying a program out called "IconRestore" hopefully this small app will restore my icons back to normal every time I boot up. I will see how this goes and will let you know.
Oh and yes RED-FROG, I know what google is and I know how to use it. Unfortunately google did not have my answer and I have been searching for 2 days now. . Hence the reason for this forum topic incase someone knew the answer but never posted it anywhere.
If you also wish to be technical, you have to learn to listen/read what people say/write before you go ahead with the help
Just saying . |

So what version of Windows7 do you have?
Since Windows7 has been released people assume that you're talking about retail.
If you have some beta version then don't expect anything else to happen.
You said that it only recently happens since you have a new graphics card.
I know that icons get re-arranged when a resolution change happens on-desktop while a game launches.
Meaning, if you arrange icons all over the screen @ 1680, and you start some game that uses a lower res and is so badly coded that it also affects the desktop (for example when the game starts/ends), the icons lose their saved positioning and will re-arrange after name or whatsoever.
Happened many times to me. Most of the time on old bad games, for example when they hung up at launch but changed res.
Your new graphics card must be the key to that failure...
But really, just get used to something else that allows better workflow, other than desktop icon spam, |

I am currently running a full version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I am not running the BETA anymore. I purchased my own copy of Windows 7.
In a twisted way, your correct about the graphics card being the key point of failure, BUT desktop icons should not be affected by one's graphics card swap, considering that icons postitions are not saved to the graphics card. How ever, I am aware that when ATi made their stupid drivers and Catalyst control centre, it appears to have taken control of my desktop icons.
The error message about the MON.Independencies has something to do about it because the error message suggests that it reads/writes the icon files position to it. But you obviously did not read that part either, along with the link I provided in the first post that I got from Google.
I am not really prepared to give up my desktop icons because you suggest so to get used to something else that allows better workflow, other than desktop icon spam.
If this is your way of giving up helping because you don't know anything else to suggest, then stop helping, and lets see if someone else can come along with the answer froggy
Also, the icon recover program did not solve the problem. << Uninstalled |

I do not wish to revert back to my old ATi Radeon 3870 x2.
I bought the 295 because its a really good card.
I know the 300 is coming out soon, but I had no patients to wait for it.
Try another recommendation. |

It was a really bad idea then. Actually AMD/ATI offering better cards at the moment (Dx11, more performance per watt/cheaper/singleGPU), and a single fermi gpu chip that will be produced by nvidia will outrun your two gtx295 gpus, that draws twice as much power than other cards...for nothing.
It was only produced by nvidia to have the fastest card on the marked (it's a marketing thing), but less to be a good performance per price card - or required at all.
Also the DirectX10 cards marked is soon to be dead.
AMD/ATIs HD5 series cards own everything at the moment.
to the recommendation
Revert back to WindowsXP if you can't live with Windows7s desktop icons that always change back.
I wonder if you want to arrange the icons like the guy in Episode 1 @ 8:00:
http://www.thewebsiteisdown.com/

and which particular game were the 3780x2 not able to render fast enough? |

nice choice
Oh crap that card costs 325€ here. The "XT" version 331€ an the "XXX" 340€
325€ = 484USD
I'd not really feel any performance difference since all games (I have played pretty much every new game out there...) are running beyond the minimum anyway.
(negative) thanks to the consoles.
But games such as Dirt2 and Alien vs. Predator will be worth upgrading to Dx11.
(2 more Dx11 titles would be Battleforge and Stalker: Call of Pripyat)
edit. hA Warlord, I am curious, what is the graphics card rating under Windows7? |
