I was going to post this in the RF Pimp My Map thread, but it does not appear to be there.

Anyways, here is a preview on what has been done so far for Town 3

There would be a way, but there is probably a limit too, also you would have to make a mod for it.

For everything you make or most things you make, have everything made into Objects. Example, a building. A complete object, but for its interrior, you would be teleported to an area outside the map and into the buildings interrior. The only problem is, you would not be able to include windows, unless you made it so that when you jump out of one, it would teleport you to one on the object building... Bah im confusing my self. Anyways, I am not sure if my theory would work. It would be nice if it did.

The speed of the processor is irrelevant.
A slower CPU builds slower. A slower car reaches the goal later.

Do you think I could do a super duper huge map overclocking my Phenom cpu to 4 x 3,9Ghz?
1,5Ghz (single core??) is absolutely nothing lol.

It has something to do with the memory only. (RAM and maybe even CPU cache)
And of course it has to do with HOW the map is built.
Like RED would treat 10500 Faces made of boxes easier than 10500 Faces made of cylinders.

Huh? I wasn't saying RED always builds maps at the same speed even on different clocks.

You said that map complexity scales with CPU power - and I said that's wrong which is fact.

Plus I said that slow cars reach the goal later - RED obviously builds slower on slower CPUs. But both achieve the same distance/complexity. The road/Game-engine limits it.

The video card does not have any relation to RED building at all.

You are both wrong. The reason for the limits in RED is due to the fact that the engine cannot simply render as much as it could of done, if RF was made in like 2005 or something.

Because back in those days in 2002, we only had processors that were capable of going up to 2GHz or more, which were our old AMD athlons, etc. So the developers were only able to create the engine based upon what hardware technology we had at the time. I got to say though Ice, if you have managed to break the RED limit, you should share this information with everyone, and also take a screenshot of the built status from RED to verify that it is correct. I do not believe for one second that you are able to work any more on a map with that amount of faces in the level. Until you provide a screenshot, then I will believe you .

Further more, CPU has nothing to do with what you can build in RF. I have a Core2Quad and I only managed to make Danger Canyon 3 with it crashing a few times and it almost reached the RED limitations.

By the way, is your whole map made out of Detail brushes?

Synthetical map




Funny how the building speed has pretty much not increased AT ALL.
This is absolutely unnatural. Any other editor does increase in performance.
RED creates many unanswerable questions. RED is a myth.

Furthermore, I got tired of building/adding brushes. I did NOT even go as far as crashing RED. I'm just satisfied with 44568 faces.
I'll update the highest reachable face count (on THIS MAP) later on.
If everything done right, 100K might be possible. Who knows.

40.000 still is a joke compared to 1.092.296
Those are dynamically dropped trees in Mars Wars. And they are rendered at once. Unlike in RF where 10.500 consist of a whole map.

(if ANYONE wonders, my Bios has an overvolt (1,40V vs 1,35V) at clock speeds already)

I don't even know why you're looking for ways to go high above RED's limits. It doesn't matter if the map loads, it matters if it runs well (60+ FPS will be a suitable minimum for the sake of arguing) on the average gaming PC. If you map doesn't run well, it makes no difference if it loads or how many faces it has.

Personally, I'd really like to see mappers putting more time into being creative in the editor they are presented with. Red Faction was not designed to render 100k poly maps, and as such it will not do it properly. It will not function properly while being forced to do so. ANY mapper worth talking about can make a good looking map for under 10k faces.

Most RF mappers waste their resources and make maps that play horribly. Work on your creativity and game theory before worrying about breaking polygon limits. That goes for everyone, not just the three of you.

NOTE: Having said that, I don't claim to be perfect. Many of my maps play horribly and lack creativity as well, I'm by no means innocent.
