I'm trying to make some foliage and I'm currently using brushes, with grass texture and key-frames to make them No-collide. Obviously its going to lag some people and I know its going to break my Red Editor soon, if I make any more.

So I'm basically asking if anybody has any good ways or good idea's of ways to make foliage, with particle effects or make them in game objects? Please let me know if you can think of any

Well, you could always make them into Objects in 3Ds Max.... Im not entirely sure how that would pan out for you though.

Ive made the planets in my space mod out of objects and they are perfectly fine...

Just an idea, but you can go with what you want. Make them low polygon though... less lag if theres less to render I think < confused face

Spikey, you're right except that RF is horrible at rendering meshes period. That fact alone will make the map close to (if not completely) unplayable given the amount of meshes required to achieve the desired effect.

My advice? Use a different engine or accept that the RF engine will never be able to render foliage in a way that both looks decent and performs satisfactory. Sorry.

I use RED Edit because I enjoy it, its nice and simple, Where you can just build a map to take ya mind off things. Sure it may not be possible to do it like today's games but it's fun is to try and do your best.

Anyway, I'm asking for idea's, what would be the best possible way? I think it maybe done with emitters because you can turn them off at a distance. but I will try that last off.

I'm currently using faces with 4 vertexes as a rectangle, and stretching them as far as they need to be. there is allot less brushes in these pictures than it looks, only around 28-30ish works out about 100-150 to cover the entire map. maybe alot less depending on how far i can stretch them lol.

I Plan on adding more types of plants/grass/bushes in the foliage but this is just me messing around so far, trying to find the best way to do this. It doesn't look to bad from above when you look down, I've try to angle them a bit and put flat grass so when you look down you don't see the basic floor texture. But again this is just a test.

if your wondering why it's tall grass, well in short... its because its been abandoned with good reason, so nobody could cut it.. the original level is part of a single player. but this the converted "ctf" test map at the moment, which is slightly different.

On the highest part of the level. working on making the grass lines less noticeable.




Perhaps i can add some rain as-well.

good idea ice I will turn up the fog abit and play around with it. see how it looks
Edit: turned up the fog a bit then matched it with the sky box. Its definitely given the level more character. Thanks ice.

Yep SeeLanCeLoT this is REDMOD. Still no actual name, That's just the name for it so far.

Well I did add some fog, but sadly I had to turn it down a bit. because it was not drawing the far end of the level. so you'd suddenly see a tree appear in the back ground when you walked forward That would reduce lag Ice, not make it lag more

Its coming along nicely now I think. I'm going to work on getting the sky box to look better eventually. Still need to add some more plants in the foliage too, i got some nice bushes and flowers.



It's running very smoothly, I've really tried to keep it good on slower computers. Since I know some RF mappers are still strict on performance, i don't know why . I also don't want the map crashing on me, where i get to a point i can't add any more. RED did get a bit crazy on me, but I was manage to tame it again after it crashed my red.cfg and made RED impossible to use. Think it was some TGA file I added that it didn't like. luckily I keep a red.cfg back up so I didn't have to set all my settings again lol. *RED never fails to surprise me*

wow man that looks really nice and very realistic...sorta looks like something made outside of RED. great job, almost makes me want to start mapping again....almost

Hey, by the way spike would ya like to get some people together one night this week and test REDMOD? oh and my phone is CENSORED , I'll let ye know when I got a new phone. Also I'll pop in vent some time, when I can be arsed to get my microphone set up.

This map is turning out beautiful I've just added some sound ambience to it, so there is birds and other natural creatures in the background, some other stuff going off in the background too as this level is also linked to the single player, but I wont give that away. fixed/changed a few textures and lighting to look better. There is a real/true feeling in this map.

I'm very pleased with this map so far. It's been a bit buggy again today but I've manage to stick at it and fix it. It's a strange bug, basically when you move around in free-look or in game and look at a certain angle it crashes. I've had this problem a few times in other maps, one was linked to a portal and glass in the window, I just had to switch them around * CENSORED stubborn RED*, 1 when I have to many detail brushes and too many semi-transparent textures.
Did a bit of a clean up and all its running smooth again. RED seem to liked it when I turned all the foliage into a key-frame and made them no player collide. I thought that would have been the end for this map but again, RED surprises me. So i've been sneaking around in the huge grass and listening to the sound of birds in the trees. I love it and its so much fun building this map. i Eurge anybody who is reading this, and thinking about building a map for good old RF. To go ahead and build a master piece, put your heart and soul into it.

oh, one last thing, I'm looking for RED-FROG, I sent you a PM on your old account months and months ago but I stopped getting replies did you get another account or something?
Anybody who can bring me a RED-FROG alive will receive 100 gold coins.

Ahhh thats why I did not get a reply back when I txted you about Minecraft. We had the script server running for one day and then notch updated the game to 1.3, which made hmod out of date lol.

At the moment, we are running the Minecraft 1.3 Vanilla, but there is no hmod yet until they update it.
Mind you, Mindcraft got a hefty update.... Beds.....

ah I've just been waiting with Minecraft its a bit of a pain when they bring updates out and ya scripted server stops working

SeeLanCeLoT i notised ya comment Still working on SR 3 Green Jungle run map so far , but gotta find out about waterfalls.
My Advice would be use a brush, texture it water texture. make it scrolling texture. then key-frame it so its non collide. hope it helps.



As for a Name. I've been thinking of a name since the start SeeLanCeLoT

No, wait it doesn't... it did have a name but I forgot it months ago. I thought it wrote it down, i remember it was a good name.. darn I need to keep thinking of a name Anyway good news is the level got a name at-least. Ctf-Overgrown.rfl

Also got a new gun and maybe another soon. that would mean *goes and checks..*
*Thanks RED for crashing for no reason* anyway, 11 New guns with 2 that still use the old model, the Shotgun and the Sniper Rifle. but they are allot different from the RF ones and feel different. only 4 more left to change, Riot Shield, Rail Driver, HMG and rocket laucher.
