The SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bill which was going to be passed through Congress in the United States was written to stop people from obtaining content illegally. The big problem was that it was badly written, it would allow the government to take control of the internet and take down websites if they felt like it. But on another note, the Piracy act was to stop websites from broadcasting copyrighted content on their sites. This means that websites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Mediafire and many others would be taken down and then the company of the copyrighted content could sue those websites for broadcasting content that didnt belong to the website, but belonged to the companies. thats kind of SOPA in a nutshell but there is probably more to it that I may have missed.
