What is everyones thoughts on this?
Link
I heard it on the grape vine, but the suppliers cutting their stock is only going to finalise the situation. you would have thought the suppliers wanted to help keep the shops open! It's once of the UKs biggest Game chains, if not biggest and its now going to follow Woolworths, Past Times, La Senza, etc...
Apparently HMV isn't far behind them though! Wont be long before the supermarkets, and clothes shops are the only things left in town highstreets.
this will mean Gamestation will go as well, unless I'm mistaken? |

I don't know all details of the story, but EA force every player to go on Origin to maximize profit, and this effect game retailer for sure with big blockbuster AAA missing. When EA mega publisher refuse to ship title everywhere, in every store around the world, you clearly know that they changed there strategy to sell games! Digital version put more fear on store than ever before! If store decide to reduce there ~40% profit on sell, they will maybe continue to sell games and adapt to reality that they only put the damm thing on a tablet without years of work & investment.

Yup, Gamestation owned by the same company last time I checked... its been a while coming but you could have seen it... GAME are expensive for games, always have been and as a result of digital convenience, won't always be. lol
Digital took off as Steam was cheaper. Even now when the price isn't that much different, convenience takes over. I could drive into town (or take the bus), say £3 of fuel/parking/ticket, then spend £35-40 on the latest and greatest.... or stay at home and have it downloaded for £35-40 and quicker than the trip into town. Without moving from the sofa, or by doing the housework etc so that I *can* play the game when I get back instead of being moaned at for not yet doing the housework....
GAME just never cottoned on in time to the fact that they'd have to compete with that. They needed to be cheaper to make people think of them for the latest and greatest... when a big new game comes out you'll find it in GAME for £40, Tesco for £30 and online for £40. A week later it'll be GAME for £40, Tesco for £40 and online for £35. Why would you ever consider buying it at GAME? |

You've met my GF it seems!?
I know that feeling all too well!
Game have never been the cheapest, Gamestation is/was good. I think the only thing that has kept them both going is the second hand market, its not enough to compete with online sellers though. Last few games I have recieved:
Assassins Creed: Revelations (Online)
Modern Warfare 3 (Online)
Dynasty Warriors 7 (Off a mate, so second hand)
RockBand 3 (Online)
The last game I bought from GAME, was Red Dead Redemption, and that was only due to getting a voucher for a birthday. |

I think it's due to the suppliers making more demands for digital downloads more than hard copies of games on CD's. Producing games on CD's costs quite a bit for the companies who make the games. If you look at how things are going now, you have :-
Steam - One of the biggest online game delivery systems known on the internet which rakes in quite a revenue.
Origin - Not doing so well, but kind of EA's answer to Steam. Making their EA games only exclusive to Origin, however, users do not agree with Origin's built in system to scan people's computers for illegal downloaded or installed games. This makes it difficult to get any EA game now since EA is only releasing the games they make on Origin. They have stopped games being sold on Steam, but Steam could not give a a damn lol.
Its a real shame that Game has to rocket like this, but, while this is happening, make use with what you can out of it. A lot of games went on sale so get yourself down to your local game store and buy what you can . |

Woolworths ah man, now you are talking my childhood. I never knew it was a foreign store until I was an adult and they had closed down here in California. Don't know about other States nor if they had any.
It's like books store here. Why good to the a brick and mortar to buy a book when I can just either download it on Kindle or have it ship to my home address for free on Amazon? It's still kinda sad that the world is going this way. Means a lot of jobs will be lost. |

It is a shame, its nice to actually go into a shop and see what you are buying, but if the price isnt competitive people wont do it.
I know alot of people go into shops that sell TVs and washing machines, find the one they want then go home and order it online. Basically the shops is no more than a showroom for everything available online.
Woolworths website is still going as its a separate business apparently, but god knows how it expects to stay open as it gets no visibility. I have never been on it. |

That's pretty much what I do with all electronics Beat, go into a shop and have a play around with it. For instance a phone, check out how the size fits my hand, weight etc then go home and find a deal online.
Though as The Gadget Show showed you can haggle on the highstreet. But not many people are willing to try |

To be fair what do they expect!?
lol.
Our TV we were going to buy online, but it turned out the shop we were in was doing it for the same price and we could have it there and then. So we went for it. Tried to haggle but we already corrected him on the price and saved £20. LOL. In the end he wasnt having any so went for the price. |

Quoting jimblow | Personally i will only buy a hard copy of games. Anything else is silly as far as im concerned. There just isnt any benefit for me in buying a digital download. Plus i prefer having the disk. case and documentation on the shelf.
They had Woolworths in New York when i was a kid too. I havent seen one in years, thought they were history.
The only product that i will buy at walmart is toilet paper. I would buy composted manure there for my flower garden but my friends family has a small farm. |
So you obviously havent had Steam yet then ?
There is great deals for games on Steam. Some games are going for 50% off.

I tell you in case you didn't know, because it's a kind of trap...
You need to watch out for new used game, because as another EA initiative, they will charge your extra fee to get online account/multiplayer and even various part of single player game to make profit on second hand games.

More & more true, it's a tough adaptation for store and probably a reduction of profit for a lot of them. But day 1 price of often too high and drop too fast after, I think particularly games business as a whole need to shift with a more normal approach to sell GoOds & maintain there price a lot longer, but with a more accessible entry level instead of a quick cash in overpriced. It's mind blowing sometime when you see that hard work 10% of there price tag few month after, it's a non sense.

Same thing for me, I like to have real physical games I like on a "library" same as movie & music collection, with cds inside the box, open it months/years after. I buy digital sometimes when the price is just too low to not buy it, often for "grade B" games or Valve games, because is there platform that also always updates...
Ca$h... Anyway

I dont do digital purchases. I like to have the physical copy as alot of people do and the proof is in the thread here! But its the price difference that depends on where I buy from. Only digital purchases I have done is via XBox Live Arcade, which HAVE to be bought online.
Apparently Game have bidders, so they MAY survive...
