jimblow, I don't think that's going to happen sadly.

I remember playing Red Faction back on 56k dial-up. It used to have a 2hr disconnection limit, so I had to work out at 2-4KBps if I could download a map or not! (Until I found getright!)

This site has changed alot over the years, and I do think the Fileserver going was the final nail in the coffin. There has been several other blows to the site, most noteable, the lack of success new sections had.

Looking at the sections we still have listed here:
EVE Online - Failed
Huxley - Failed
Stargate Worlds - Failed
Star Trek Online - Failed
Star Wars The Old Republic - Failed (Did this even get opened!?)
Battlefield 2142 - Failed
Delta Force: BHD - Old Section, but semi-successful
Crysis - Minimal audience
CS: Source - Minimal audience
Doom 3 - Failed
Fallout 3 - Failed
Farcry - Minimal audience
Farcry 2 - Failed
Half-Life 2 - Minimal audience
Halo - Minimal audience
Halo 2 - Failed
Killing Floor - Minimal audience
Operation Flashpoint - Old section, minimal audience
Portal - Minimal audience
Red Faction - Successful Section
Soldier of Fortune: Payback - Failed
Team Fortress 2 - Average audience
Unreal Tournament - Average audience
Unreal Tournament 2003 - Successful Section
Unreal Tournament 2004 - Successful Section
Unreal Tournament 3 - Minimal audience
Dragon Age: Origins - Failed
Gears of War - Failed
Hellgate: London - Failed
Max Payne - Average audience
Max Payne 2 - Successful Section
Red Faction: Guerrilla - Semi-successful at first, now minimal.
C&C3: Tiberium Wars - Minimal audience
Red Alert 3 - Minimal audience
Starcraft 2 - Minimal audience / Failed
Sins of a Solar Empire - Failed
Supreme Commander - Old Forum? Minimal audience

Most of our new games just never got off the ground. We got some files in, we posted news in most situations. Just never happened.

I'm most gutted about the Starcraft 2 section. I tried to get that section going and got some posts but it ended up going nowhere, and I spent HOURS uploading trailers.

I visit this site nearly daily, still but never see any updated stuff.

Descent 3 and Delta Force 2. THAT long ago...

Site is now hosted on my works' servers, whilst I technically have FAR more processing power compared to what we had during the sites' peak ... its no longer my bandwidth or processing power to use and abuse

I've got permission to host the site on the basis its pretty much just a forum now. It will host the PCRW game I've been working on in due course which will probably spark a bit of a revamp around here but aside from that... nothing planned.

This site was always my hobby, but I think it was doomed when I got my current job back in 2005 working with PHP on a daily basis. My enthusiasm for the site somewhat died at that point as I didn't want to do at home what I did at work all day.

The game reviews module that was written in 2007 ish... no-one ever saw it. Got to about 80% complete. Abandoned.

The Xbox Live module that linked L4Y with your account and let you compare your scores with your friends... 95% complete and a few of you saw it (staff members if I recall). But still abandoned.

Now my hobbies are new and exciting stuff.... standard website development is boring as I've done it over and over.

I moved onto Xbox game development (XNA) for a while... even got a game working and 99% finished. Playing it for more than an hour would result in it slowing down and crashing. After spending around 6 months of debugging, walking away, coming back, trying again, walking away and just generally getting frustrated with it all... I abandoned that as well. lol

Then started work on PC2. Got 1/4 of the way before a new idea sprung forward into my mind...

Might finish this one...

Hi everybody

Maybe the best thing is to focus only on successful section that forge an identity to the site instead of try to do everything that many site already have, particularly big franchise.

Red Faction was clearly the first attraction & also the best on the internet, if only RF was functional, I think the site will live again. Keep in mind to anybody, that L4Y, IS the only real dedicated Red Faction website on the net & by far, anytime gamer will think old RF, only one word need to come in mind, L4Y!

At will, keep section that started L4Y Descent 3 and Delta Force 2 for history & L4Y identity

Quoting Garner

its no longer my bandwidth or processing power to use and abuse

Q1:
Can you use more to revive classic L4Y files hosting?

Like;
Descent 3
Delta Force 2
& of course Red Faction that surpassed any site Ever.

Few more if you really like to have them on your site to show & give a unique visit,
but far more less section! to increase a tight community. A simple forum section to play & organize match, have a public L4Y voice server, a functional topic feedback message...

You love Red Faction = Go to L4Y
Preserve & make history by staying on internet.

About RF, even ModDB is light-years of what L4Y had in content... And it mean a lot!

Garner?

Q2:
With smaller site & maintenance work, can your enthusiasm return with what we suggest? You can use also this site to promote your new game project also, but only if it attract a lot of gamer first.

Quoting jimblow

I petition the site owner to bring back the file server, reply if you agree or disagree.

I "agree" in the sense that I think is the best think it can happen to the L4Y community. "Petition" is another story that put pressure on Garner, but I think L4Y right now don't provide enough interactive content to survive in long term.

I wish a complete functional RF section comeback that will stay on internet & L4Y known as the true home of RF,

I had (and still have) the resources to host L4Y (files and all), and I offered.

Offer still stands if you've got the original site intact.

PS. I can't help but think that the "Error:" bug is keeping a lot away. I know I lose interest real quick when I have to manually modify the URL to actually load a forum page. Not to mention those who wouldn't even know how to do that.

L4Y is pretty much dead.

I've had this as a homepage tab for years and haven't posted in a very long time. This topic caught my eye because I thought someone I knew might have died.

I'm pretty sure (like 98% certain) that there is no way to save it now without investing an assload of money into it and turning it into something completely different than it was before.

Besides, everyone who was here has grown up and left the nest.

I've got an engineering degree, moved to a different town, and now have a full time engineering job where I build electrical components for the automotive industry.

The silver lining is that us modders here ... we've learned things from this site. Things we will never forget.

One of the most valuable lessons from this site I've realized is the only thing stopping me from finishing projects is myself. That realization has been invaluable to me. I still have the same mode of operation now with my job that I had then.
1) Get in way over my head with a project.
2) Learn whatever is necessary to finish said project.
3) Work to complete it.
4) Keep working even after you're sick of it.
5) Finish it.

It's given me an extremely broad set of skills outside of my field and my hands on attitude has made me very valuable as an employee.

Nice support & I hope Garner will at least think about it, for the community & personally, hosting files is an offer we cannot refuse...

Yep, another sad truth, I didn't wrote all of them, we can probably add the main news page related to things that don't exist anymore, maybe also remove the topic L4Y closing down...

But the fact that Garner didn't replyed after this time, is not a GoOd sign. I hope the old/new goober offer will spark in is head to make L4Y a better place, maybe even give the torchlight to goober if Garner have no more interest in L4Y.

Besides, everyone who was here has grown up and left the nest.

New things can attract fast for sure, but I think that a simple topic saying that L4Y is back with files hosting, reduce sections & make few fix, L4Y can survive & increase traffic to maintain a small community. About leaving the nest is another sad truth for many, but I think that if L4Y is functional like the old days, even old player will keep the bookmark and visit time to time.

Maybe yes, maybe not & we don't know is reason, is live etc. I try moderate things for the L4Y community & give a nice invitation to Garner to reply, because the site is in a critical state & if nothing happen, at least some minor fix & guide line to focus at, it will not only continue to be a graveyard, but more headstone will be planted.

Garner

You should reply something to your starving community & please do your best to make filehost a reality with goober. If you give no response to this topic or minimum effort to preserve your community, it will maybe you that will put the last nail in the coffin. Many dedicated member wait your feedback. When functional, your site is nice, don't let it die.

About error bug

If it can work & help some... I did it few time & it appear to work, I use Max Payne to enter & navigate the site, no error

Well its nice to see a few still check in.

Morgoth & Goober, I don't think thats an options as it stands. It was and still is Garners hardwork. I wouldn't think it fair to take the site form him (which is why I appreciate the offer and not just doing it!)

At the same time, when it comes to the files and what not, feel free to setup/upload/host the files for all as that is absolutely fine, just wouldnt be fair to trade off of the "L4Y" name if you catch my drift. Maybe if you can get the files uploaded and hosted, L4Y can have a large "re-direct" to the file storage listed on the home page?

The "error" really does need fixing. For some odd reason. Staff members don't see it, unless logged out.

I think the first things to rectify L4Y's current situation is:

-Clean up the site, and fix the errors/bugs/missing links etc... (Make it functional again)
-Inject some life in to the place with discussions and what not. (we can do that, just requires a bit of effort on our part.
-At the same time neither of the above 2 points, will keep the site going UNLESS the site has a direction/purpose.

Yes we need answers from Garner on this, yes he is busy and has lost interest [b]but we can try to make a start on the second bit)

Well its nice to see a few still check in.

I try help the RF/L4Y community to preserve it, but him also in the pool of member that didn't contributed much in last months for many reasons, that sadly include the state of the site...

I will try to finally reply in What car you driving... with picture taken of my ->"Sport Car" <- Generally more also, login more, but Garner don't help currently.

Completely agree and we navigate all theses years here because of him, BUT, the crude reality now is L4Y need action to survive. Garner have many possibilities to continue to be the owner of the site, but same time accept precious help to maintain the site a minimum quality.

Quoting Beatonator

Is what we purposed to Garner when the restructuring happened, but apparently, never had interest with re-direct link due probably to extra work.

Quoting Beatonator

If nothing happen, even only a tiny thing, a little bit of life & maintenance effort, L4Y will die. And with the community suggestion left, including extra effort & collaboration for files hosting/mirror... L4Y have chance to live again.

Sounds about right

I guess its more than I love doing new and exciting things, the trouble is that some projects take a LONG time. By which time there are new and other exciting things to go poke.

What I'm on now is still pretty hot... and is expected to be for years. I took a month or so off to go nuts on a game for a while and recently came back to it al recharged. Huge steps have been taken, more of a plan laid out and as a result far more of a mature approach to getting things done.

One thing I can say to you all, as exciting as something may be to just delve in and start playing - if you don't have a plan of action, you'll get lost quickly.

After coming back this time around I spent a few days getting back to where I was before, revisited the notes I'd made and then spent the best part of a day breaking down what I wanted into small bite sized chunks.

I use an online service called http://pivotaltracker.com which is highly recommended for anyone planning any sort of project. Go put all the tasks in there and mark them off as you do them. Put the bugs in there as you find them. Plan things out and suddenly you'll give yourself direction.

I don't want to cause problem, but this topic just go nowhere.

We talk about the future of your site Garner that many of your community would like to preserve, you reply a huge chunk of text about an off topic comment, but not even a single word about L4Y & is/your agonizing community about real problem...

I know you are busy & have less interest on this site & probably let it like it is, but why not share your mind a little bit about theses problems? Why not try things to avoid a close down? goober help, anything?

To finish on a positive note, I didn't experience 'Error Bug', so it is fixed? Who knows...
