Real life, aka the girlfriend at the time

Somewhere the code for little 3d rendered spinning planets lives, if I recall correctly you could build custom ships, the research screen was done (albeit with many placeholder icons and most objects non-existant in the game itself), I just got to the bit where the ships needed to be rendered and hit a brick wall.

Took some time out to work out what I wanted by building some tech demos for custom ships. Never came back

I moved house in November into a place that was built in 1850 and has been a rental for at least the last 50 years... in otherwords, run down and in serious need of some love.

Once I've sorted that out (although I've been sidetracked when I realised I could build a wireless controller for my new boiler...) I might get back onto one of these sorts of projects.

Found it

Given its not been worked on for 2 years... looks surprisingly good.

Sadly a country mile (or six) away from being ready for anything. Using tech I wouldn't use now as well. Going to (slowly... don't expect anything for long time...) take a look at reviving it.

Would be nice. I keep going back to the old PC admin panel and try to start a new game. lol. Even if I could start a game, might be a bit lonely without other people to play though!

See what you mean... gah... I mean this code hasn't been touched in years and yet its slowly breaking itself.

I know it used to work just fine because I'm fairly sure registering didn't give an error before

In this instance... the game doesn't exist

The front of the site is there, the management... but the entire game folder is missing on the server. Clearly didn't get copied over when we moved here.

I'll check the backups a bit later. I should still have this all somewhere. One of the two backup drives L4Y was kept on has failed in the last year... the other should still be fine.

I really should sort that out as well....

Erm.

So I have backups... of various things. But the L4Y main ones were on the failed drive.

I may have lost everything

[edit]
Wait... found a 17Gb file called 'web.tar.gz'. Thats probably a complete backup of everything... I hope...

Not sure what else I'd have that was 17Gb...

[edit #2]
Holy crap... and another 6Gb tar.gz file called 'pics'. The ancient media center / storage server can't seem to open files this large, copying them to local machine to investigate!

[edit #3]
Was the hosted site files.

L4Y used to have live backups on its servers and an offsite (ie my house ). When we moved to the current servers I copied the files we needed. Current servers are also backed up, no issues with what we've got but I must have never copied the PC folder.

The offsite backup encountered a minor technical issue when the drive failed last year. I had assumed the 2nd disk was also fine but it was kinda repurposed accidentally as a PVR disk for the TV... wiped the contents without realising what it held.

tl;dr
I no longer have a copy of the files we once hosted or the code for Planetary Command.

Gutted.

Going to be trying to recover anything from the formatted drive. It was barely used as a PVR so majority of the disk *might* be ok.

EPIC fail!

Note to self, do not leave Garner to handle your backups... ever!

Yeah... I kinda figured 4 copies of everything would be enough!

Problem is its been what... 3 years since we 'shut down', backups of the live stuff is now all handled by the current host. L4Y runs on multiple webservers with the code stored on a file server with a "hot spare" in case the first spontaneously melts. Both have HUGE RAID 5 arrays of disks. Heck, different power sub stations feed the various pairs of servers... the more important servers even have dual power.

We've got multiple backups taken per day, daily backups kept for a week and then weekly backups kept for 4 weeks. Those backups are on other servers, again on RAID 5.

Finally, daily backups are stored half way around the world at another location. Once again, RAID 5.

L4Y lives on an insane number of servers and god only knows how many drive spindles. Drives can fail at multiple points and we're still golden. The thought that the ancient backups I had sitting at home from 3 years ago needed to survive wasn't really there...

Serious overkill for a site that had its prime back in 2005 or so lol

Anyway, the drive is currently going through a recovery program. Given its about 1/3 of the way through and found 800+ files to recover I'm hopeful its going to get something off it. Just hoping the code backup isn't corrupted in some way when it gets there!

Keep us posted!

Yeah, its always that one point of failure you never expect to happen that screws everything up.

At work, I was ordered to pull some disks from a server (Raid 5+1) and we later found out it had critical data required. The old Raid controller had no information on what order the disks went in, so I had to take pot luck if I was going to try and bring the server back up.

The data had been hosted on 3 different servers at different points and also had backup tapes, which had been stopped as no-one realised this data still existed. it fell through 4/5 safety measure we had and almost lost all the data. Luckily got away with it!
