Welcome!
Post 0 / 1

this is sounding like that RFU thing you guys did. So are they making a culpture or a level that is pretty. If its the second one it's not really groundbreaking. I dunno playability shouldnt be a factor. Just judge it on looks.
I will cry for you tonight, but tomorrow, Never....again!

ok if yur gonna make it RED art comp then why not just make them make a level that looks good, take a screenshot and post their names.

And if yur thinking that someone could just sya it was there's well then u have an arguement from me. Even if they uploaded the map and withing the .rfl they put in the lvl props that they made it that doesn't mean that they couldn't have stolen it from someone anyways. JMO anyways.

What's the point of spending all that time on a level and then just taking a screen of it? Screenshots are extremely easy to minupulate, and yes they could be anybody's. This is a mapping competition after all. So a map needs to be submitted!

Basic Outline of Competition
- Create detailed and beatiful map using RED editor.
- Judging is focused on looks rather than gameplay. Eg:

Gameplay: /10
Brushwork: /10
Textures: /10

Lets add on to that a bit...

Artistic Values:

Use of color
Use of space
Use of materials (clutters)
Composition
Originality

Those are some more judgeing edges that would make the compitition more interesting. I am willing to take part in running this compitition. As long as there is participation!

Yeah, once we get a few more judges, we'll work on a proper judging system. That was just the first thing I thought of really.

Great ideas, Escaflowne, but yes, we do need to get some mappers involved. I posted over at the ISM forums, got a slight response there, but we need some more.....

Edit: What is with everyone using NCF's av? Its really starting to annoy me

it sounds fun. i think ill participate, but one problem. I myself have created maps in the past(unreleased) that IMO look incredibly realistic. the problem is....the framerate of the map. i used incredible textures to create a feel of realism, and in doing so, the framerate of the map fell DRAMATICALLY. i dont think these maps WOULD be playable, if they were made as REALISTIC as possible.
so, i guess my question is....are we trying to create intriquite, detailed brushwork here, or a map that is just as "pretty" as we can make it?

im still rather curious about the actual building of these levels. Is it based on brushwork creativity, or on realism?

Its all art.

Some art you see is amazing realistic, The mona lisa for example. Other art is not. This is all about look good, not necessarily realism. Just needs to look good.

Its on the brushwork, lighting, texturing the general 'feel' of the map and more.

It doesnt necesarily have to look realistic just good, if you know what I mean.

I'd love to have you join in on the competition.

A little off topic but I think someone/we should combine our efforts and make a 1 Gigabyte map zipped. Sucks for us 56k'ers. [Censored] to upload too.
=Juice= ANYONE ANYWHERE 1 VS. 1
Listen and Silent are spelled with the same letters. Pretty cool huh?? Not really but anyways.

A little off topic, more like alot off topic

A 1 gigabyte pack would be pointless it would still take ages even with the fastest net connection

Go study up on art a bit and you will know that it does not exactly require amazeing amounts of detail. Take W.R.E.C.K.S. Microfaction Redux. That map is a peice of art. And his Kill Bill map really caught the eye!

You dont need to murder framerate to have a decent looking map. With all the requirements for the compitition we shall clearify entirely what we want from you as a compeditor.

I really think that we need to get a show of hands of who is willing to map for this competition. So come on people! Lets see some participation!

The gig map is way off topic, and would not agree with .VPP builder anyways. Please remain on topic in here.

It is hard to judge art, because it is an individual thing. What is art to me, doesn't necessarily come out as art to someone else.
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

That is true, and which is why some education about art is required in judgeing. The maps will be judged on looks on a scale of 1-10 by all the judges (and will all be judged properly, and not just throwing 10's everywhere they can.)

We are going to gather up guidelines on what the judges will be looking for. Most of the judgeing will be based upon basic art concepts such as composition and balance. Other options will be gathered later, as we are yet to decide upon a few things. Originality will also play a part in the competition, based upon other RED maps. Recreations of areas such as W.R.E.C.K.S.'s Kill Bill will be accepted. (concidering that realism is also a form of art.)

We are also open for suggestions. Gameplay is being debated at the moment, but it looks as if it will also be added into the judgeing.

If very "personalized" brushwork is to be used, it will probably add a lot of faces. This will make for very low FPS on lowtech-computers, specially if they have low-end videocards. And of course, it will make gameplay worse.

A couple of examples:

Map 1:
Brushes: 574
Faces: 29818/10500
Face Vertices: 135193/50400
Vertices: 38590/13650

Map 2:
Brushes: 502
Clutter: 398
Lights: 999
Faces: 27822/10500
Face Vertices: 127023/50400
Vertices: 29920/13650

Both plays fine on comps with high-end cards, and do not lag. But they kill lower-end videocards

Can tell you before this even starts who would win. Sorrow. That is if she still maps for RF. She has more art and flare for artistic maps, than any other I have seen.

No; RED-FROG is going to win, or me
