I was watching Pimp My Ride on MTV one day and i saw a special computer get intalled in a car. Immediatly i thought that would be awesome. so i got on the internet and found some crummy computer desinged for a car. So i thought i could make my own i figure all i need is a laptop HD, a Mini ITX board, a laptop DVD/CD player, a power supply and a touch screen monitor.
But all this is expensive , i was wondering if one of you know where there are some deals on this stuff. |

Yea, the guy built a pc inside a WinXP box AND a Linux box!!!
Windows XP was installed in the WinXP box pc and Linux was of course installed on the Linux box pc. |

well, ive already checked most of the places you mentioned except newegg (Doh!).
i checked complete systems for cars like carbot and they definitely aren't cheap.
Quoting tagmaster | If it was Pimp My Ride its no chep deal my friend | If you are talking about price ... depends on what you get. but i can make it, ive got experience in both car electrical systems, and computer building. Just gotta combine the two . Mini ITX boards are small enough i can fit it where the radio is and mount the screen into the dash.

What can i say, i don't like doing things easy and i hate half-a##ed jobs, plus i think i can do this as a shop project and get a grade for it. |

He can do it, he just knows where to get the parts.
Know exactly where you are here. I love doing my own mechanicing and electrical work on my truck, especially A/V systems. However it can get a bit spendy, unless you know where to look. Remember, if there isn't nothing wrong with it, there is nothing wrong with USED if you want to save some dough. You can find used stuff packaged in the original box sometimes with only a months wear on it and nothing wrong for 1/2 the price sometimes.
Have you checked used item sites and auction sites? Such as ebay or half.com?
Secondly, you an also buy from an unauthorized dealer. Do this if you feel confident enough in your wiring, because if you F it up, you don't get a warranty from them. However, it is often much, much cheaper. Just a thought.
Last of all, rarely do any stores you drive to have the best deals. The best deals you're going to find is going to be in a warehouse somewhere out in the desert. I bought an amp for my truck (2,160 W max, 700 RMS) that would probably have been over $200+ at a store, that I got for $150 online.
It's all in looking, spend a couple weeks on it. It might seem tiresome, but saving a couple $20-$50 on all the parts will add up quite quickly. And might help fund some other project you want to do afterwards. |

Did i Ask ? I thought i was trying to ask people where to find deals.
i just thought of a problem .
I gonna need a special amp to boost the Audio output ... I heard that regular car amps need a strong signal to begin with, PC Audio output isn't even close. Its only powerful enough for headphones.
Any advice? |

Simple solution..
Buy a second hand laptop, usb hard disk caddy with a nice 250/300gb HD, Power inverter or some other device to provide the power to the laptop/other components, buy a cheap touchscreen, I got my 14'' touchscreen for about £90 in the UK, hook up the touchscreen in the front, leave the laptop in the boot, run cables, mount screen, Sorted.
Even add a wireless card into the laptop and you can do war driving. |

Get a CD player with AUX input. Its designed for headphone-type power. It's what I would like to put in my truck, if I had the money... it's not their expensive, its that I don't have any money for it. Anyways, they make them so you can hook up your Ipod, Nomad, whatever, using a headphone to headphone cord (Line-In cord, can be found at any wire dealer, say Radio Shack). Then, take the laptop, run the cord from it to the AUX, and voila! Easy solution to an easy problem. From there you just ran an amp to all your speakers from the head unit. There's no need to amp up from the laptop, this will create a nightmare of wiring as you try to seperate all the different channels and everything. Let the head unit take care of all that. It's made to do that. |

Oh yeah, and you can find headphone amps if you insist... however I'm not going to help you sort the wiring from here. The problem is you would skip over the headunit if you went from computer to speakers. Now, if you don't want a headunit (for CD's or whatever), well it's going to be a bit of a mess of wiring. Of course you noted on Pimp My Ride there is always another stereo in there. This is for ease of wiring. If you over-ride that stereo, then you basically have to wire, everything, apart. If you'd like to do it right it's going to be a right pain in the CENSORED to get the right sound out of it. Not that much of a pain, but it's going to cost a bit, as in you're going to be needing headphone amps and then regular car amps to push your speakers... I find it much easier to run to a headunit. You'll end up using the CD player, I'm sure. Go to a store and see a good CD for cheap, hop in the car, and it's nice to have a CD player right there anyways. If you're talking about using the one directly on the board, (if you went from a laptop and not an ITX board)... well it's definetly possible. It'd be something like this.
Laptop -->Headphone cord -->Headphone amp -->Seperate channels (if you're going to want nice, i.e. surround sound, this is where it'll get hell... not because it's hard, but because the wiring is going to get huge) -->car amp (different for highs, mids, and lows) -->then of course the speakers.
Remember programs like Pimp My Ride can throw around 100's of thousands of dollars like pocket change! |
